cpragman
The app announcement says "EMC’s Retrospect app for iPhone and iPod Touch allows you to log in one or more Retrospect 8 servers and easily monitor their backup and restore activities over a Wi-Fi or 3G network connection. FEATURES • Connects via TCP/IP over a Wi-Fi or 3G network." So I gave it a shot... It appears that the only way I would be able to connect to my retrospect 8 server over 3g would be if the app had a way to tunnel thru my company's firewall first, since my server (and I imagine most people's) are not publicly exposed to the internet). I found no means within the app to create such a tunnel. It appears that unless I'm overlooking something, the app needs to be integrated with something like the iSSH iPhone app, so that a secure ssh data tunnel can be established thru the company's firewall, and then routed to the retrospect server. Chances are, I'm not going to be using my iPhone retrospect app when I'm in the office and within the company's secure wifi network, I'd just walk over to the server. What the iPhone app would be most useful for would be to check the status of the server when off the premises.
cpragman
Well, I found one way to do it after experimenting... First, use the iPhone VPN tool to open a VPN connection to the company's network, then launch the Retrospect iPhone app.
Maser
Does your company offer a VPN solution? Maybe you could set up the VPN on the iPhone and use that?
jlbrown
Anyone know what port Retrospect Server is listening on for iPhone connections? We could just use port mapping at the firewall to allow access from outside.
rhwalker
Anyone know what port Retrospect Server is listening on for iPhone connections? Retrospect 8 console port It's just a mini-console. Unh. Get down, James. You work so hard! Russ

rhwalker
http://kb.dantz.com/article.asp?article=9705=2 Um, am I missing something? That seems to be the exact same KB article link that I provided upthread yesterday, except my provided link works and this one doesn't (the "=2" at the end of your link, Robin, should be "&p=2"). GMRMacBackup
I use the VPN method over 3G, it's not bad. Our company uses a Cisco VPN interface and an RSA authenticator, the built-in iPhone VPN access dovetails perfectly. Works with the iPad as well, although I would like to see an optimized version that takes up the full screen instead of just doubling the app.
