unfortunately
I think the last Windows patchday has some negative sideffects on Retrospect (on Windows XP). I can't use Open File Backup option anymore. Message in the log is: Can't use Open File Backup option for C: , error -1017 (insufficient permissions) Besides the patches nothing has changes in that machine. Reinstalling Retrospect did not help. See this message with links for the Patchday (it's all in German) http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/76572 Other programs have problems as well: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/76760
nekr0phage
Hi, If something in the patch caused VSS to start failing you should also be seeing errors in the Windows event viewer. Are there any VSS related errors being reported there?
unfortunately
Message is: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(0000025C,0x0053c020,00037D78,0,00038D80,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070057. unfortunately
I think the Volume Shadow Copy services are broken... they break easily. I tried every "fix" that I could find, including reinstalling COM+ ... no help. vssadmin list writers always gives me the error message Error: 0x8000ffff. A good compilation of "fixes" is here: http://2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=932 But that didn't fix my problem. I can't start the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider service anymore. I think I will disable Open File Backup, save my system with an imaging software and the data with Retrospect.
johndon
When I updated to V 7.5.320 I started getting this error too. I then re-installed V 7.5.285 and the Open File Backup failure went away. Is there something wrong in V 7.5.320?

Mayoff
This is interesting. As far as I know we have not made any changes to open file backup code in the .320 version. Under Windows XP we are using the MS VSS support. These errors are coming directly from Microsoft.
sklarcpa
I have also been encountering this error since June 17th (and, naturally, my hard disk had its first failure in two years several days later). Do you have any recommendations?
