Drive failing after about 2gb Backup

Recommended Posts

We are using a Quantum LTO drive and it seems to fail regularly a short way into the backup.

It is a brand new drive and we have updated the firmware and replaced the tapes so we suspect a software issue. We have run cleaning tapes through the system.

The following error is recorded:

Additional error information for device "Certance Ultrium 2 DC" [1:6],

Sense > 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 1e 00 00 00 00 0c 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

(CERTANCE|ULTRIUM 2 |1914)

Trouble writing: "1-Thursday 2" (963248128), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

The backup only ever completes about 2 or 3 gB before requesting a new tape even though they should hold more than 200gB.

Error 206 is never a software issue. It is a hardware issue reported by the tape drive. The "03" in the sense code above is the actual 206 error reported by the hardware.

You can try to turn on Tape Alert for more error details

You could have a bad SCSI cable or connection problem.

Try to disable the tape driver within Windows Device Manager
