Incremental backup

Recommended Posts

Hi. I have 200Gig of data I need to back up. This is stored on an external firewire drive. As this machine is always in use it is difficult finding the time to run a full backup (using a single AIT drive). My idea was to move the FW drive and AIT drive onto another machine to run the full backup, the move them BACK to the original machine to then run the daily incremental backup. The problem is Retrospect wants to run the backup from the beginning, all 200Gig. All I want it to do is append to the tape amended/new files.

Any Ideas?

Hi

Moving the drive like that can cause Retrospect to see the files as changed. There isn't really a way around this.

You can run the backup of the main machine in pieces. 20 GB a day for 10 days and then run one final "mop up" backup to catch anything you missed. At that point you can continue to do incrementals.

Thanks

Nate
