schacht
I am running windows NT server 4 (service pack 5), with a DEC DLT2700 Tape Library (7 slots). the problem I am having is when I setup a script and schedule and /or run a backup now, I am unable to get this to run a complete backup without assistant's. In other words, its starts a backup, when it finishes with the first tape it puts it back in the slot and sits, it does not go and get another tape. What am I doing wrong? Is there a certain naming to use for the backup sets / and tape's? Thanks, Jeff Schacht
Mayoff
An Immediate>Backup operation will not change tapes automatically. All scheduled automatic backups should change tapes as needed. Go to Configure>Devices and try using the "scan media" command. This will scan all the tapes if Retrospect is talking to the library correctly. schacht
I've done that, as long as I have a tape in the tape drive, and I tell it to scan media it goes through all tapes, if I do not have a tape in the drive but they are all in the library slots it will not scan. I have setup and ran a scheduled backup (automatic) and it starts it backup, finishes the first tape, puts the tape back and sits there, it does not go to the next tapes. Can you send me any/all info on how to setup retrospect, configure clients, label backup sets, best way to setup a script. Thanks Jeff. S

Mayoff
I have the following notes about this unit. Quantum DLT2700 through -4700 series: A seven-tape Quantum DLT library has four modes which are set using the key on the front of the loader. The modes are Locked, Automatic, Manual, and Service, with each mode's key position designated by an icon. To work with Retrospect, the library must be in Locked or Automatic mode. Changing the Magazine when Retrospect is Open: To eject the magazine, first choose Eject Magazine from Retrospect's devices toolbar. Turn the loader's key to the Automatic position and, after the green light on the loader's Eject button illuminates, press the button. When the door opens, tilt it down to its fully open position and remove the magazine. Load the magazine completely with your desired tapes, replace the magazine in the loader, turn the key to the Locked position, then push the door closed. The first tape is automatically loaded into the drive. Changing the Magazine when Retrospect is Not Open: To change the magazine when Retrospect is not open you need not take any special action. Tape Slot Numbers: The library's door has a number for each tape slot, numbered 0 through 6; ignore these numbers. Consider the magazine slots numbered 1 through 7, corresponding to Retrospect's slot numbers.
Guest
Jeff, I have experienced the same problem with 5.6xxx. When starting a new backup set from scratch, Retrospect finds the first erased/blank tape, then once full, waits until I intervene to name the next tape what it expects to see e.g. "2-backup", even though all media was previously scanned and many erased-blank tapes to choose from. It then continues without this problem on seeking future tapes. My initial full backup takes about 8 tapes. I've got a ADIC FastStor SCSI backup unit using DLT IV tapes. One thing I did to resolve a bunch of problems, particularly with filtering, was to delete all scripts created under past versions of Retrospect and re-create them all from scratch. This did not however solve the "find the second tape" problem mentioned above. Gary
