Client disaster

I just upgraded the server and clients to 5.6. At this point, it's a disaster. The server can connect, but then just times out with a dialog box that says "Client Connection" with a "closing" message. It eventually quits, and after that can no longer connect to the client. It reports the client as busy. So, I can't back up anything but the server. My patience is worn out. I'm really not happy. If anyone knows of a solution, I'm all ears. There was nothing in the KB.

Do you get a specific error message when connecting to the client computer? What does the "status" in the client control panel report?

Do you have trouble connecting to more then one client?

If the server is unable to connect try restarting the client computer.

Which operating system are you using?

Do any of the problem computers have multiple NIC cards?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Config info:

All machines are W2K (server and clients). The server has multiple NICs (3).

I do not get any error message connecting. The client

status indicates that it is connected to the server. However, after

performing any operation from the server, such as displaying volumes on the

client, I get a dialog box indicating that the server is closing its

connection with the client. At that point it hangs, never disconnecting. If

I click Stop on the dialog box and then attempt another operation, the

server reports that the client is busy. I can stop and restart the client

service on the client, however, attempting any further operations from the

server repeats the cycle.

If I take this so far as to initiate a backup, which I was finally able to

do simply by stopping and restarting the client enough times to get that far

in the process, the server shows a file/folder scan in progress that itself

then hangs.

I didn't have these problems in 5.1, although I've never been able to backup

a laptop -- always a network error, even when server and laptop are on the

same network segment.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I did check the configuration. Connections to clients on that interface are configured to go over the specific NIC associated with their subnet. It remains an issue where I can connect to the client, but cannot disconnect. I have a few .gif files I can send that might make the sequence a little clearer. I have no idea why it is behaving in this way. Strikes me as very odd.

I'd be happy to forward the .gifs if there is a means. Thanks,

Gordon
