Why disk full error on USB drive?

Using a Maxtor 5000LE USB drive and was attempting to do a full backup of a laptop drive (under Win2000, SP2.

I got a 'disk full' error about 40% through a backup of the 8gb of data that was on the laptop drive.

Here's the Retrospect Express log of the event.

+ Retrospect Express version 5.6.132

instIniWriteItem: WritePrivateProfileString failed, error 5

Quit at 2003-05-08 15:05

The Maxtor drive is 80Gb, FAT32 volume.

Total used = 17.9Gb

Total Free = 58.3Gb

Is this a FAT32 problem or something else?

Are there any backup options settings that can override this problem?

TIA
