scottdog129
Hello All, It seems that my backup is taking longer than it should I start the backup of my partitioned hard drive at 12:30 am and it takes about 8 hours. I do not have any software compression running and the total size of the drive is 13.75 GB. Should it take this long to run? Mayoff
What type of backup drive? How many MB/Min do you get?
scottdog129
I am using a Exabyte VXA IDE drive. It seems to get about 25MB/min and that to me seems somewhat slow.
Mayoff
I would expect this drive to get at least 100+ MB/Min. Try doing a backup to a File or Disk Backup set and see if the performance is different. That will help isolate the cause of the speed issue. scottdog129
how long does it take to "prepare". It seems to be sitting there a while.
scottdog129
It finally finished and clocked a rate of arounf 52MB/min.
Mayoff
Was that the File Backup set or the tape set? We need to compare the speeds of a disk based backup to the tape backup.
scottdog129
That was the file backup set. There is a difference of about 25MB/min.
Mayoff
What type of PC is this? What speed? How much RAM? What system version?
scottdog129
It is actually a PC running NT 4.0 with dual P4s and 512 DDR RAM.
Mayoff
What is the processor speed? I would expect a file backup set to run much faster. I would try the File set again with compression off (if it was on). We want to see what speed your configuration is able to get. Ultimately, the slow tape performance could be a device communication issue. Are the source drive and the tape drive on the same IDE bus? It may be faster if the are on different buses. scottdog129
They are P4 1.3 GHz. The devices are on different buses. I had the software compression turned off. I dont know if the hardware is doing it, though.
