BobRand
See my 6-2-09 Post # 123222 Topic # 30827 Same Subject. Retrospect “Can't use Open File Backup option for Bob on OS (C:), Error -1017 (insufficient permissions)†I first reported this problem back in June. I had many Retrospect backup errors after installing Microsoft VISTA SP2. I did not get any help at that time. I have been looking on my own over the past months. I have found and fixed some things such as: Disk check of C: found and fixed some errors, a Microsoft update file had to be deleted and regenerated so that Microsoft update would work and I removed and reinstalled my F-Secure antivirus. I have tried to schedule F-Secure full computer scan for a period when Retrospect is not scheduled to run but have found F-Secure full computer scan has not run as scheduled. I have to run F-Secure manually. It runs manually without problem and no virus or malware have been found. System Data: I have 32 bit Microsoft Vista Ultimate. It is running on a Dell XPS420 with Q6600, 2.4GHZ quad processor that I purchased in December 2007. I have 4 GB @ 667 MHZ of memory (3.3 GB usable). I have a 256 MB ATI HD 2600 graphics card. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 22 inch monitor (1680 x 1050 pixels). I use F-Secure from Embarq for antivirus. I have MS Office Small Business 2007 and use Outlook for e-mail. Microsoft Works 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 came with the computer. I have 2 Optical drives E: CD-R/W & F DVD-R/W: a 320 SATA hard drive C: & D: and a 250 GB SATA hard drive G: for backup. I use Embarq DSL. Microsoft update is auto and all Microsoft software is current. Other programs such as F-Secure, Windows Defender, Retrospect etc. are up to date. Current Retrospect Auto Backup Setup: I run two automatic backups. I backup my user documents daily at 11:50 PM. I back up my complete computer weekly on Sunday at 11:40 PM. I have two backup sets for user documents so that I have one week of backups on set 1 then refresh set 2 and have one week of backups on set 2. In a similar manner. I have two backup sets for my full computer backup which alternate weekly and refresh every 6 weeks on a staggered schedule. All backups are to internal hard drive G. Current Retrospect Problem: In the period from 7/1/09 to 9/4/09 I have had 13 of 41 user documents backups with errors and 2 of 5 complete computer backups with errors. The backups with errors do not seem to have any pattern. (I was on vacation for about 3 weeks during this period so no Retrospect backups were done during that period.) Errors are always headed by “Can't use Open File Backup option for Bob on OS (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions)â€. Help Needed: Any help with “Can't use Open File Backup option for Bob on OS (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions)†would be appreciated. Are the backups with errors valid for recovery? Will Retrospect run on the new Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit? Are there any known Retrospect problems when using F-Secure antivirus Retrospect Error Log 9/3/09 10:50 PM + Normal backup using Bob's Documents at 9/3/2009 10:50 PM To Backup Set Backup Set D... Mayoff
Check the Windows Event Log for VSS or Shadow Copy Service errors. The error is coming from Windows. Otherwise, close all programs including outlook prior to backup.. Retrospect is not yet supported on Windows
BobRand
Thanks for your comment. I will try to check the log you suggested. Many of the Retrospect "Can’t Use Open File Backup Option - Insufficient Permissions" occur early Sunday morning when nothing is running. Can anyone comment on "Are the backups with errors valid for recovery?" Robert Rand
Mayoff
You should me more worried about sharing violation errors. Those are the errors which show files that could not be copied.
RandomPerson3984
Had this same issue, tried this: http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=110723&view=findpost&p=638670 Even though that post deals with Mozy, the MS Shadow Copy Service was the culprit, and this fix provided there worked like a charm.
