meat
So after applying the latest retrospect patch I attempted to do a full backup to our tape library. I started this at 2:00PM on May 16th. I got an email last night, may 18th, at 8:00PM that stated the following. From Retrospect: Script "Backup Assistant - 5/16/09 2:09 PM" failed during automatic execution, error -205 ( lost access to storage medium). Please launch Retrospect and check the log for details. I checked the log and it had the following: + using Backup Assistant - 5/16/09 2:09 PM at 5/16/2009 2:09 PM (Execution unit 1) To Media Set Full Backup (Friday)... 5/16/2009 2:09:44 PM: Copying Server HD *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/run/cups/certs/0": can't read, -1101 5/16/2009 3:08:20 PM: Snapshot stored, 127.3 MB 5/16/2009 3:08:37 PM: Comparing Server HD *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Application Support/Retrospect/Catalogs/Full Backup (Friday).rbc": different data size (set: 131670496, vol: 261215756) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0230.csstore": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-023501.csstore": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Filesystems/Xsan/data/Spaceball1/log/cvlog": different data size (set: 643053, vol: 694872) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Filesystems/Xsan/debug/nssdbg.out": different data size (set: 46521301, vol: 46538167) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Logs/named.log": different data size (set: 540912859, vol: 540923764) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/.mdworker_Mr-Server-2_CrashHistory.plist": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mdworker_2009-04-30-200916_Mr-Server-2.crash": can't read, -1101 *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/mdworker_2009-05-02-011722_Mr-Server-2.crash": can't read, -1101 *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Library/Logs/PasswordService/ApplePasswordServer.Server.log": different data size (set: 56627, vol: 77942) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/db/dhcpd_leases": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/db/authserver/.stats": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/db/openldap/openldap-data/__db.001": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/db/openldap/openldap-data/__db.002": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/db/openldap/openldap-data/__db.004": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/slapd.log": different data size (set: 2717058, vol: 2748674) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/system.log": different data size (set: 1239551, vol: 1413156) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/apache2/access_log": different data size (set: 198879905, vol: 198884260) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/apache2/error_log": different data size (set: 136700279, vol: 136701992) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/asl/2009.05.16.asl": different data size (set: 11131279, vol: 12128258) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/asl/StoreData": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/cups/access_log": different data size (set: 708994, vol: 713812) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/cups/error_log": different data size (set: 6946267, vol: 7275398) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/log/krb5kdc/kdc.log": different data size (set: 659256278, vol: 659431694) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/run/bootpd.pid": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/samba/unexpected.tdb": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_afp.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_ftp.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_info.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_ipfilter.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_mail.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_qtss.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_smb.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_web.lock": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/servermgrd/servermgr_xsan.lock": different data size (set: 472953, vol: 472951) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/spool/cups/cache/job.cache": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/spool/cups/cache/remote.cache": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/private/var/spool/postfix/flush/server_epiccreative_com": different data size (set: 260, vol: 286) *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Users/admin/Library/Preferences/com.apple.PreferenceSync.plist": didn't compare *File "/Volumes/Server HD/Users/admin/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iCal.helper.0017f292fa80.plist": didn't compare 5/16/2009 3:59:48 PM: Execution completed successfully

Mayoff
The 205 error is a hardware error reported by the tape drive itself. It could be caused by a device communication problem. It could also be caused by a bad tape or just dirty tape heads on the drive. Is this the first 205 error? Did you get any lockups or freezes? Try cleaning the tape heads and maybe try a different tape.
meat
This is the first 205 error to my knowledge. I've had plenty of other errors. In fact, since we've been using retrospect 8 (including during the beta) I've yet to be able to finish a full backup successfully. To my knowledge there were no lockups or freezes, remember, this ran over the course of 54 hours, I'm not babysitting the system while it's doing this. I will run a cleaning tape through today. Is there anything else I can check into before I commit to another 2-3 days of waiting before a failed backup?
meat
I tried to run a cleaning cartridge through the drive and it's giving me an error on the device. I will resolve this with the manufacturer and attempt another backup after this is resolved.
