Exchange mailboxes not visible

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We have a Retrospect 7.6.123, small business server standard backup solution.

I have just registered the product after evaluating it for a while. Everything worked fine before I bought the license, but now I have problems with the exchange mailbox backup.

The mailboxes are not visible anymore.

I have performed the followning from the "Exchange Backup Requirements" found in the knowledgebase but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

1) Review Appendix B of the Retrospect Users Guide

2) Review the Retrospect Training Videos for Exchange

Critical steps

Part 1

You must create a Retrospect Backup User account (RBU) that is a member of:

1) Domain Users

2) Domain Administrators

3) Backup Operators

4) Local Admins if Retrospect is running local to the Exchange Server

5) Some users have needed to add the RBU user to Enterprise Admin.

6) Do NOT include any other groups

-The account must have a mailbox.

-The account can NOT be hidden from the Global Address List or GAL.

-You must send at least one email to the mailbox to initialize the mailbox.

-The Exchange Server must have public folders

-Retrospect may have trouble seeing mailboxes if the Exchange Server and the Computer name do not match.

Part 2

1) Go to Configure>Preferences>Security in Retrospect and configure Retrospect to Run as a specific user.

2) Enter the RBU info into the Security settings.

3) Go to Configure>Volumes. Right Click on the Exchange Server and select "Login As"

4) Configure Retrospect to login to the exchange server using the Retrospect User account. Running Retrospect as the "domain administrator" is not good enough and you must use the steps in Part 1 above.

Microsoft Windows server 2003 for small business server SP2

Microsoft Exchange Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2:service pack 2)

I administer the backup via terminal services. When the problem occured I was logged in as domain admin. I just tried logging in as the RBU user, and the mailboxes appeared. Then I tried logging in again as administrator, and the mailboxes were still there.

I ran a backup of the mailboxes while I was logged in as RBU and that seemed to go ok. I will try to log out and see if the scheduled backup runs ok as well.

If it works, then everything is fine. But it still puzzles me why this happens, as I have specified the RBU user as the user that Retrospect is to use.
