Extracting a *really* old storage set ?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible for Retrospect 8 to extract the data from a very old storage set?

I believe it's from Retrospect 4...

If so, how? I've been unable to get RS8 to recognize these files...

Some details: There are 3 CDR's, containing the files:

Reel Storage Set.1

Reel Storage Set.2

Reel Storage Set.3

Thanks for any help,

KCG

Here is some (possibly) useful information about the storage sets.

In the terminal, the command

strings Reel\ Storage\ Set.1 | less

produces:

Reel Storage Set
Rxv2Pery
Retrospect
4.0.4.0,
Dantz Development Corporation 1989-1997
ISubv
Reel Archive
G8@LMS

Burning Flesh.dv

(etc...)

No luck so far w/ Retrospect 6.0.204 (w/ driver update 6.6.101)

This doesn't work:

  • Tools --> Repair --> Repair File Backup Set --> OK
  • 'Open' Dialog - titled "Opening a backup set catalog file..."
  • Select 'Reel Storage Set.1'
  • --> Fails with the message:
"Sorry, the file 'Reel Storage Set.1' is not a catalog or is heavily damaged."[\li]

This also doesn't work:

  • Configure --> Backup Sets --> More --> Rebuild --> File Backup Set --> OK[\li]
  • 'Open' Dialog - titled "Opening a backup set catalog file..."
  • Select 'Reel Storage Set.1'
  • --> Fails with the message:
"Sorry, the file 'Reel Storage Set.1' is not a catalog or is heavily damaged."

I haven't been able to find any path through Retrospect

that would let me rebuild the catalog file given a file

storage set.

It always ends up asking me to open a file w/ the dialog

"Opening a backup set catalog file..." and gives the

error message above when I select 'Reel Storage Set.1

These files are from 2001... I think they're from a

storage set with a separate catalog file (which is now

lost), but I could be wrong.

The files were each on their own CD-R.

Is it possible that they're actually part of a CD storage

set, rather that a File storage set?

I don't know if Retrospect creates CD's w/ a readable

file system and a named file as is the case with these.

(I plan to try that route, if I can get Retrospect to

configure the CD/DVD drive on my Powerbook...)

In case it matters, they were created by Retrospect

4-something running on Mac OS9 on a G4 Powerbook

(Lombard or Wallstreet...)

Finally, in case this might help verify the format of these

files, I'm including a hexdump of the 1st 256 bytes of

Reel Storage Set.1, 2 and 3 below...

Thanks for the help, and apologies for the

epic length of this post!

- K

Well, _are_ these File Storage Sets?

What are the Type and Creator codes for the files?

What are the names of the CD-R discs themselves?

Doh.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

I was certain they were a Retrospect storage set,

but apparently I'd forgotten that I'd used stuffit to split

it up into CD-R sized chunks...

I didn't even think to check the Type/Creator code - OS9 seems so very long ago...

(In my defense, these CD's have been in a box for the last 8 years...)
