Difference between backing up to file and to disk?

Recommended Posts

The first Retr. 8 video doesn't explain what this difference is. It actually fails to describe the last option (file)! So I'm wondering what the difference is. In 7 and below I would always back up to files on a backup disk... Hence my confusion.

Also, I'm not sure what the end-result ought to look like. My backup to disks so far (of the root directory) are creating folders (named Retrospect) which contain the media sets (my named sets) + and EMC (unix executable file with 0Kb) which then contain subfolders and a lot of .rdb files. I assume that's as it should be. I was expecting a single file with a colored icon as earlier.

It might be an idea to explain outcomes and appearances, ie what to expect.

Disk media sets can span to multiple disks. They allow you to restore while a backup is still running. They allow you to groom old backup data, they are not limited to 1 TB. They don't use resource forks so they will work on basically any file system.

File backup sets are very limited in capacity and flexibility.
