burke.marg
I recently purchased an IOMEGA Storcenter x2 with EMC Retrospect software as a backup to a workgroup file server. I find that to create a backup or copy of even a very small directory takes hours. Retrospect says "Copy in progress. Preparing..this may take a while." What is it doing and is there any way it can work faster?
Mayoff
Which Retrospect product are you using? Are you using the Express HD version or Retrospect? Performance should be about the same as doing a backup to any other network volume.
rhwalker
Is this "small directory" on a much larger volume with many files, where the larger volume is indicated as the source? If so, try defining a Retrospect "subvolume" as that small directory so that Retrospect doesn't have to scan the entire larger volume just to match the files in that small directory. See the index in the user's guide. It's a design issue with how Retrospect figures out what files need to be backed up. Selectors are just a filter through which ALL the files of the source volume are run. Subvolumes cut down the number of files that have to be evaluated for backup eligibility. burke.marg
Thanks for your reply. I am backing up a small directory within a large file share. I don't see any documentation for subvolume in the Retrospect Express HD documentation.
