Catalog out of Sync

Recommended Posts

After looking around a bit, I didn't find info on this particular issue. Perhaps someone could direct me,..thanks..!

Problem:

Mac Dual 450 with Initio Bluenote SCSI card (latest driver) plugged into a Seagate STT2000N (from Club Mac)

In OS 9, with Retrospect 4.3 it works perfectly.

In OS X (every version 1.0.4 - 1.1.5) with Retrospect 5.0.205 and the 2.8 driver set (also all earlier versions), it finds the drive and we can write to it. But when we try to update the backup we always get the "Catalog out of Sync" alert message. When we then try to rebuild the catalog in the "Tools" menu it never stops searching and finds no files.

When backing up between internal drives and/or partitions this is not a problem - only going to the tape drive.

This drive and card seem to be qualified,...any ideas...??

Thanks again..!

Does it happen immediately after starting a new backup set or does the error develop over time? If the latter, that could point to SCSI issues.

Do you get crashes, freezes or other errors during backup? Is verification on?

What happens after creating a new backup set? Does the error happen to multiple sets?

What SCSI troubleshooting have you done? Have you tried a new cable? Terminator? Tried the drive on another computer?

Have you checked with the vendor of the drive for firmware updates?

Does it work under Mac OS 9 with Retrospect 5.0?

Does a File Backup Set append normally?

Thanks.

--Does it happen immediately after starting a new backup set or does the error develop over time? If the latter, that could point to SCSI issues.--

I can complete one backup, but when i try to add files, that is when I get the "out of sync" message.

--Do you get crashes, freezes or other errors during backup? --

No

--Is verification on?--

Yes, the first backup verifies successfully, but if I go into Tools/Verify, it verifies all but the last 5 files.

--What happens after creating a new backup set?--

I can create a new backup to tape (after erasing) if that is what you mean

--Does the error happen to multiple sets?--

yes, for all sets/tapes, I can only get one backup and then I have to erase.

--What SCSI troubleshooting have you done? Have you tried a new cable? Terminator? --

tried several different cables, just got a new Granite cable and active Terminator, doesn't seem to help.

--Tried the drive on another computer?--

that will be the next test when I can gain access to one

--Have you checked with the vendor of the drive for firmware updates?--

It appears to have the latest firmware, as regards the Seagate site.

--Does it work under Mac OS 9 with Retrospect 5.0?--

Yes

--Does a File Backup Set append normally?--

everything is fine until I try to write to tape in OS X, then out of sync

Additionally, the active terminator gets stuck with all the lights on when ever any of the above faults happen.

thanks,.. Ned
