sstecher
My laptop was repaired by replacing the motherboard and hard drive. After reinstalling Windows and Retropect Express HD the program shows no restore points or copies though an external hard drive with a backup of my old hard drive is connected. Is there any way to get around this problem?
Mayoff
Does the external hard disk show up with a drive letter? What version of HD did you install? What operating system version?
sstecher
External hard drive (My Book Premium ES) does show up and with Retropect copies folder. HD is version 2.0.214. Windows is XP with Service Pack 2 update.
Mayoff
What happens when you go through the setup options and choose backup now?
sstecher
The program prepares to create a backup, but I don't want to backup this drive, I want to restore the files on the external drive to the C drive. Sorry, I don't understand the point of this question.
sstecher
The Retrospect manual says "because restore points include filesa that are specific to your computer's hardware, you should only do a full system restore to the same computer you backed up." Since the hard rive and mother board have been replaced, would a full restore not work on my repaired computer? Can I just copy the files from the Retrospect Copy folder on the external drive to the C drive, and restore my computer that way? Will the quote above have an impact on this? I tried the "Perform Backup Maintenance" option, but nothing seemed to happen. What does this mean?
sstecher
The knowledge base provides a method to initiate a backup maintenance by deleting the restorepoint file, but when I followed these instructions and restarted Retrospect it did not scan the computer or rebuild the restorepoint catalog file. ???? Mayoff
I suspect the software is not seeing the data on the backup disk, maybe because the directory structure has changed. What is the exact path to the .rdb files? You may need to call technical support for specific help to recover the data.
