Continual -1028 Errors

Recommended Posts

Error -1028 (client is not visible on network).

I am getting this on numerous Macs, despite having installed the latest client version. I have to run the installer again, tell Retrospect to Forget a client, and re-add it by IP address before it's recognized. I have to Define new volumes and add the client to the script it is used by.

This is out of control, and is happening to at least one machine a day.

All versions of Retrospect are current. All Macs are Intel running OS X 10.5.4

What process do you take to reproduce the problem?

When this problem happens what is displayed in the Retrospect Client User Interface?

What is displayed in the terminal when you use the Top command to view the current processes? What Retrospect or Retroclient items show up? What % of the CPU is displayed?

Why do you add clients by IP address if they are in the same local network? Do the clients show up via Subnet Broadcast or multicast?

I don’t want to reproduce the problem. I don’t want the problem. This happens randomly to various machines on the local network.

When it works, it shows that it worked. When the server can’t see it to back it up, nothing appears, because nothing happens.

On what - the client or server? What does it matter on the client if nothing is happening and I'm getting a -1028 error?

Because they don’t show up on the local network all the time even if i reinstall the client software

Here is a log of one example: JoAnne was backed up on the 15th, and invisible on the 16th. Ditto Conference Room. Both machines were up and running, and no changes were made to either one on either of those two days. The error on the Conference Room machine on the 16th was a similar error I got on another machine - also one day separating the backups - no changes made - all machines operational

I am getting this on numerous Macs, despite having installed the latest client version
.

- Did you initially update these machines from an older version of the client software to the newest version, using the Retrospect application and an .RCU file?

I have to run the installer again, tell Retrospect to Forget a client, and re-add it by IP address before it's recognized. I have to Define new volumes and add the client to the script it is used by.

- Are you using the installer to un-install first, before installing again?

This is out of control, and is happening to at least one machine a day.

- After you reinstall (either preceded by an uninstall or not) and then Define new Subvolumes and add to the script it's used by, will that client work reliably?

I updated the clients with the Client software posted at your site - http://download.dantz.com/archives/Client_OS_X-6_2_229.dmg

No - simply used the above file to install the new version

- After you reinstall (either preceded by an uninstall or not) and then Define new Subvolumes and add to the script it's used by, will that client work reliably?

No -I've had to repeat the process on a couple of machines

> What process do you take to reproduce the problem?

I don’t want to reproduce the problem. I don’t want the problem. This happens randomly to various machines on the local network.

How you make the problem happen will help us understand why it is failing

> When this problem happens what is displayed in the

> Retrospect Client control User Interface?

When it works, it shows that it worked. When the server can’t see it to back it up, nothing appears, because nothing happens.

I don't think you understand the question. The Retrospect Client software (not the server) has a status and an on/off switch. What is displayed in this screen is critical to understanding the problem.

> What is displayed in the terminal when you use the Top

> command to view the current processes? What Retrospect

> or Retroclient items show up? What % of the CPU is

> displayed?

On what - the client or server? What does it matter on the client if nothing is happening and I'm getting a -1028 error?

On the client. If you can't connect to the client, we need to understand if the client software is running or not.

No - simply used the above file to install the new version

You MUST use the Uninstall option in the installer program. You can not just install over the existing software. That won't fix any problems you may be having.

I asked:

"- Did you initially update these machines from an older version of the client software to the newest version, using the Retrospect application and an .RCU file? "

To which you responded:

I updated the clients with the Client software posted at your site - http://download.dantz.com/archives/Client_OS_X-6_2_229.dmg

It's not my site; the only site I have is a little MobileMe setup with some out of date pictures of my kid. The site you reference is maintained by EMC.

But your answer is non-responsive, as the download at that link contains _both_ the installer application _and_ the .RCU file I asked about.

When that link was first put up, the .RCU file contained in the available disk image was defective; if you used an .RCU to push a client install in the first weeks that it was available, that would have been the original cause of your problem. That's why I asked the question.
