teemu
A customer is using Retrospect Express and having problems. They currently have 3 laptops in an office WLAN network enviroment with a IOMEGA NAS backup storage device. Backup plan currently is: Copy 3 folders from a laptop to a IOMEGA NAS system on the network, once a week. The users are running Windows Vista. I have tried the automatic backup several times, to make sure it works, doing a manual backup first and then staying at the computer and checking during the scheduled time/date that it actually works. After that i've set the schedule for a weekly backup Mostly the erros that occur are user related, since the laptops are not at the office during the times when the backup is scheduled, BUT some other erros have also come up. The users are aware of when their backup is suppose to take place and after consulting with them, they claim they are keeping their laptops up and running and logged into windows. This should result that the backups go smoothly. However after checking the customers backups from several weeks, I've gotten the following erros during those weekly backuptimes. Error 1.) Retrospect copies 1 or 2 folders fine and then results to a network volume error. - 4.7.2008 12:01:21: Copying Outlook on Local Disk (C:) Additional error information for Disk Backup Set member "1-Backup Set A", Can't write to file \\xxx\xxx\Retrospect\Backup Set A\1-Backup Set A\AA000020.rdb, error -1116 (can't access network volume) Trouble writing: "1-Backup Set A" (690237440), error -102 (trouble communicating) Error 2.) Retrospect starts the automatic backup and immediately results to a Backup set corrupt error. Normal backup using XXX at 11.7.2008 12:00 To Backup Set Backup Set A... 11.7.2008 12:00:42: Copying Desktop on Local Disk (C:) The Backup Set member "1-Backup Set A" is corrupt or has data from another set. 11.7.2008 12:46:13: Execution stopped by operator Remaining: 13 files, 1 112 KB Completed: 0 files, zero KB Performance: 0,0 MB/minute Duration: 00:45:30 (00:45:29 idle/loading/preparing) The backup set has not been changed in any way, and the manual backup was to that particular set. Any help you can offer is highly valued.

Mayoff
It sounds like corruption in the backup set. Have you tried a catalog rebuild?
teemu
Nope, I'll have to try that next. Weird that the backup set would just break after a few weeks usage... Edited July 16, 2008 by Guest
teemu
Well, got another customer with the same problem. Automated backup executed on the scheduled date/time And stopped because of the following error: + Normal backup using XXX at 14.7.2008 9:30 To Backup Set Backup Set A... 14.7.2008 9:30:16: Copying Desktop on Local Disk (C:) The Backup Set member "1-Backup Set A" is corrupt or has data from another set. 14.7.2008 10:22:01: Execution stopped by operator Remaining: 134 files, 27,7 MB Completed: 0 files, zero KB Performance: 0,0 MB/minute Duration: 00:51:45 (00:51:44 idle/loading/preparing) 14.7.2008 10:22:01: Execution stopped by operator Total duration: 00:51:44 (00:51:44 idle/loading/preparing) MapError: unknown Windows error 1 722 VssWCleanupMetaSet: DeleteSnapshots failed, winerr -2147023174, error -1001 Immediately after this i tried running the script manually and the backup went trough without any problems. If the backup-set was really corrupt, shouldn't this be impossible ? Don't know what the windows error means, but I'm beginning to doubt Retrospect would the program that i'd recommed. The same errors keep repeating on totally different networks and computers. Edited July 17, 2008 by Guest
Mayoff
I would start with a catalog rebuild. The catalog/data is is corrupted. http://kb.dantz.com/article.asp?article=8350&p=
