samlowe
I have a Tandberg 820 Ultrium 3 tape drive which works just fine under windows and using ntbackup. It has the firmware specified by EMC and the latest retrospect drivers. The device is simply not detected. I had considered this solution since it was more cost effective than Backup Exec. Anyone have any ideas how I can get this to work. EMC won't support me since I am running the trial software. Thanks in advance.
Mayoff
What shows under Configure>Devices>Environment? You can include a screenshot on your reply. What version of Windows? Try to disable the device driver within the Windows Device Manager.
samlowe
Windows Server 2000 SP4 Tried disabling the tape drive, no change. The enviro tab just says "No tape or optical storage devices found" plus the obligatory reminder to turn the devices on before you start the computer. Mayoff
Can you take a screenshot of the environment tab and attach it to your reply? It will make thinks much more clear. The Device Status window can say "No tape or optical storage devices found" but the Environment window usually does not say this.
samlowe
Here you go... I have also uninstalled and reinstalled, booting between each event. Still no change.
Mayoff
Windows is not reporting any storage devices to Retrospect, not even the internal hard disks or CD drives. Have you restarted the computer? You may want to try and update the SCSI card drivers to the latest version. Windows 2000 may be using old SCSI card drivers, and updated drivers may help locate the device.
samlowe
I don't have a clue what things should look like. The SCSI controller has the latest firmware, bios, and drivers. The 820 is the only SCSI device. I am looking at Retro to replace Backup Exec since it is an older version and doesn't have the the tape drivers for the 820. The hard drives are all SATA devices. Backup Exec runs fine on this machine.
Mayoff
Is backup Exec installed on this computer? If so, you need to uninstall it. Backup Exec can hide the tape drive from Retrospect, even if they don't have a driver for this device..
samlowe
It is installed but all the services are disabled. I was hoping I wouldn't have to kill it if this doesn't work. I can see all the drives under Volumes. Should I see them under devices as well?
Mayoff
Optical devices and tape drives show under devices. In some cases the hard disk will also. Turning off the Backup Exec services may not be enough, it is loading device drivers at system startup.
samlowe
You were, of course, correct. After I uninstalled Backup Exec all the devices were visible. Now I am working through learning a totally new interface. Thank you for your help even thought this was just a trial edition. If I can get it figured out in the next few days I will start using it. Thanks again.
