Error -37 Invalid Name

Recommended Posts

For quite some time we have successfully used Retrospect Express (4.1A) to duplicate hard drives on key computers to an on-site backup drive, and then use Retrospect Express to duplicate to an off-site backup drive.

Recently, we have encountered a problem with one comuputer (a G4 with OS 9.2.2) where Retrospect Express apparently goes successfully through the first half of the procedure where it gets down to 0 files remaining and should change to compare mode. At that point is issues an Execution incomplete warning and stops. When we check the log, we find the following message: Trouble writing files, error -37 (invalid name). However, the log does not show the invalid name or file.

Checking information on the Dantz web site, we found that error -37 could relate to an NT server. That is not the case since we are using Retrospect Express to go from one Mac at 9.2.2 to another Mac at 9.2.2.

There is also a comment that the problem may be a windows file with a name that that the Mac cannot read. This is very possible. However, the log does not give me the name of the file.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply.

We have run Norton but have not come up with anything that looks like a name error.

One suggestion is that we got a file from a customer with a Windows character in the name which is not recognized by the Mac OS. We have looked in the logical places and changed several file names but no success. It sure would help a lot if Retrospect Express named the offending file.
