Help! need, simple backup solution

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Here is my situation:

I have Retrosprect Desktop 6.5 installed at a remote clinic on a PC with an IBM DDS4 tape drive. The practice works Monday thru Thursday. They have 10 blank tapes to rotate through

Here's my goal:

they want to be able to pop in tape 1 for monday, 2 for tues, etc. etc. and rotate to a different tape set every other week. They want to do this manually, quickly, and efficiently, because they have better things to do than mess with software. They and myself are still in love with old, simple, beautful, simple seagate backup from the old days. They want to run backup from an icon on the desktop.

Here's my problem:

I set up a manual script on the desktop for them to run. It runs a normal backup whenever they want it to. The problem is that after set # 5 it keeps going to 6, 7, 8, 9, etc. I want it tio stop at 5, and start back up at 1.

Help!

Lets see if this is what you want:

Monday week 1 = Backup Set Monday 1

Tuesday week 1 = Backup Set Tuesday 1

Wed week 1 = Backup Set Wed 1

Thurs week 1 = Backup Set Thurs 1

Friday week 1 = Backup Set Friday 1

***Monday week 2 = Backup Set Monday 2

Tuesday week 2 = Backup Set Tuesday 2

Wed week 2 = Backup Set Wed 2

Thurs week 2 = Backup Set Thurs 2

Friday week 2 = Backup Set Friday 2

OR where the *** is do you want it to recycle and go back to Monday 1?

I am not 100% clear on what you wish.

I want it to do this:

--TAPE SET 1--

-Monday week 1 = Backup Set 1

-Tuesday week 1 = Backup Set 2

-Wed week 1 = Backup Set 3

-Thurs week 1 = Backup Set 4

-Friday week 1 = Backup Set 5

--TAPE SET 2--

-Monday week 2 = Backup Set 1

-Tuesday week 2 = Backup Set 2

-Wed week 2 = Backup Set 3

-Thurs week 2 = Backup Set 4

-Friday week 2 = Backup Set 5

does this make sense?

it keeps doing this:

Monday week 1 = Backup Set 1

Tuesday week 1 = Backup Set 2

Wed week 1 = Backup Set 3

Thurs week 1 = Backup 4

Friday week 1 = Backup Set 5

***Monday week 2 = Backup Set 6

Tuesday week 2 = Backup Set 7

Wed week 2 = Backup Set 8

Thurs week 2 = Backup Set 9

Friday week 2 = Backup Set 10

and on and on and on

It labels the tapes the set numbers, and keeps incrementing the number. I have 10 tapes, 1 set of 5 for week 1, 1 set of 5 for week 2, and every two weeks I want to reuse the same tapes without erasing them first....you know, a simple backup. If i'm not being clear, please let me know.

Got it. Retrospect doesn't work this way.

You can't have 2 sets and do what you want.

Each tape needs to be in their own set in Retrospect if you expect to use that tape again on a specific day. You have to create 10 BU sets to do what you want (as noted in my example).

then what exactly should I set up? They want to click on an icon, once a day and have it back up. Are you saying that retrospect is too complex to do this? Can't we limit the sequential numbering to 5?? or even 1, that way, the staff can manage the tape rotation, and retroispect thinks it's backing up to the same tape?

"the staff can manage the tape rotation, and retroispect thinks it's backing up to the same tape? "

No. Retrospect is smarter than that. You can't trick it to backup to a tape it doesn't really want.

One set for each specific tape that you want.

One for Monday week 1

one for monday week 2

one for tuesday week 1

etc....

= 10 sets, 10 tapes.

You schedule Monday to go to the Monday tape and to cycle every other week.

Then Tuesday to go to Tuesday tape and cycle every other week.

etc.
