I just purchased Retrospect Express 4.3 in a bundle with Norton SystemWorks, and I was hoping to use it to back up the hard drive on my 550 MHz Dual Processor G4, with an internal DVD-RAM drive. I see that at least one other person who has posted to this forum is using what appears to be the same setup--using Retrospect Express to back up to an internal DVD-RAM on a Dual G4.

However, according to Apple's System Profiler, my DVD-RAM is an ATAPI Matshita model LF-D211A, which is NOT on the list of Retrospect-Qualified drives. Furthermore, when I choose the Configure Tab in Express, this drive shows up in the Available Storage Devices dialog, but it does not show up in the Device Status dialog (which appears to show only SCSI devices).

Does this mean that I cannot use my DVD-RAM drive as a backup media with Retrospecxt Express? :-((

Express for Macintosh will work with any DVD-RAM disk that is mounted on the desktop and formatted as Mac OS Standard or Extended.

1) Erase the disk in the Finder as Mac OS Standard or Extended

2) Do an Immediate>Backup using a Removable Disk backup set as the storage type.

If needed, turn off FileSharing prior to the 1st backup attempt.

That's good news! The most obvious use of a DVD-RAM drive--some would say the only use--is for backing up data. Retrospect/Express are the tools of choice for that job, so it seemed odd that Express would not be compatible with this drive.

Thanks. I'm off to give it a try.
