craigomatic
We are backing up three macs with retrospect (two being clients). Recently we changed the configuration of the back up and created a whole new one. Since this time the clents have not been registering as being backed up, whether they have or have not. So we are plagued with a warning that we have not been backed up since early May. How can we resolve this?
twickland
What was the change in configuration? What OS and client software versions are you using? If you open the client app, what shows in the history window?
craigomatic
Hi. We chose to change the machine from which the back ups were being controlled. This meant that one machine had a new Client installed on it. There was no change to the other. The Client that was installed afresh contains no history. The Client that was already installed continues to say that its last back up was on May 9th. Craig
waltr
hi craig, honestly it sounds like you are not backing up through the Client. could you be backing up through File Sharing? there would be no history, and you would get that message (the Retrospect Client does not interact w/ OS File Sharing) exactly as you describe. cheers. craigomatic
Hi Waltr Bingo that's it! I didn't actually realise you could back up through file sharing. Hence I didn't check. It does raise the question. What is the need for the Client software? Thanks anyway thats sorted. Craig
Lennart_T
Backing up using file sharing is slow and it only backs up shared files. Using the client, you can restore the entire system AND you are notified when the backup fails.
waltr
hi craig, glad i could help. i'll add to Lennart's post that not everyone wants to share out their critical data via Fileshare. for example: Accounting Data. the client can also do encrypted traffic. cheers. rhwalker
You can also firewall off clients (or company groups) but still punch through with Retro client (perhaps even encrypted) for backups. And the client can have control over what gets backed up, too (and when, if using backup server).
