Purpose of client licenses?

I have Retrospect 5.5 "Single Server Edition" for Windows (came with a Sony DAT drive), and I'm currently trying to learn how to use the backup software.

I don't have any "Client Licenses", and I'm just trying to understand the limitations of only using the "Single Server" installation for all our backups.

Could someone let me know if I my understanding of this is correct?... With regards to backing up data across the LAN, with the Server software, I can only backup mapped network drives and shared folders?... In order to backup an entire Windows installation on a particular computer in the network, I would need to install the Client software on that particular computer (which would require an additional license)?
