IrenaS
5.6 is fully compatible with Windows XP, so with a bit of troubleshooting you should be able to identify the problem and fix it. What kind of a hang was it? Were you able to stop the backup? Quit Retrospect normally? Did you have to force quit? Did you have to restart the whole system? Have you seen this hang more than once? If it happened once but has not reproduced, it may have been an intermittent problem with your backup media, device or computer. If the problem is reproducible, continue troubleshooting. Is the device that you are backing up to one that we have fully qualified? See the Device Compatibility guide to be sure that your device is supported: http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=compatibility_list What kind of device are you backing up to? Try a test backup to a file backup set stored on the local hard drive. If this completes without errors or hangs, it points to a problem with your backup media, device, or device communication. For detailed troubleshooting, see the correct device troubleshooting document in the Knowledgebase for your device and interface: http://dbs.dantz.com/faq/ If the hang persists even to a file backup set, this points to a problem with the data or source that you are backing up. Try running disk utilities on the drive. Try running a backup while no other processes are running on the computer to check for a conflict. Note that virus software and crash protection software can sometimes conflict with Retrospect, so try disabling these. If you are still having problems, gather as much information as you can and contact Tech Support for one-on-one assistance. Bob
If your backing up to CD. Then this may apply. Basically had the same problem on XP & 5.6. After 1, or 2 CDs the backup would fail with a meson error. Sometimes I would have to give the PC the 3 finger salute. My problem was caused by a MS XP Auto Update. I have since disabled this Service. If "Q309691" is installed ( Look in "Add/Remove Software". ). Then remove this from your list of apps. I spent about a week uninstalling, and reinstalling apps until I determined that the problem had to be related to XP. Hope that helps you, and others. You can goto the MS Knowledgebase and look up "Q309691". Basically do not install it, or let it be downloaded if you do not have problems with your CD burner. Guest
Thanks for the advice. I tried that but still no luck. I have the same problem whether it's to tape or firewire hard drive.
mike
I am having the same problem. Retrospect will just stop near the end of backing up my first drive. No error msg... it just stops. System Idle Process=99%. No msgs in the Retrospect Log. No msgs in Windows event log. I've tried backing up to a seagate USB, and also to a "file"... same problem. I can click "pause" and "continue"... nothing happens. I click "Stop" and get the confirm dialog. Responding "Yes" closes the window. However, "Quit" from File pad is disabled... need to force it down. It is reproducible...every time. Windows XP, Retrospect 5.6 Desktop, Dell 4100, 512 memory, all patches applied to XP. Re-installed the Seagate drivers and re-installed Retrospect. Ran "System File Check" in XP. Disabled virus scanner.
