jmm
At my work we have Retrospect running daily 24 hours to backup our 60+ clients. We have an off-site storage facility where our backup tapes are stored for two-week intervals. The problem that we are having is when we place on older set of backup tapes into our tape library we are unable to "continue" our backup from the prior set. Every time we have to recycle the tapes which causes a minimum five-day backup to a full copy of everybody's data onto tapes. This means that many of our heavy users do not get backed up for five days or more. Is there a way for us to re-use the old set of tapes without having to recycle them every time?? The other issue is that we need to keep a full set of backup tapes together for our contingency policy to be effective.
lv2ski
Is there a way for us to re-use the old set of tapes without having to recycle them every time?? Sure. You need the catalog file for that set. Then set your script to use that catalog file for that set....so that you can continue the backup. If you lost the catalog file for that set, you will need to REcreate that catalog file that goes along with that set.
jmm
Thanks for the tip but we never delete our catalogs. The script is set to backup to tape sets. Is that where I am going wrong?
lv2ski
That is fine then. If you never delete your catalog files then you will be in fine shape. You will always have them when you need to continue on a new set.
jmm
Problem is we are not in fine shape we are ALWAYS having to recycle our tapes. That is the issue we are trying to get around. We do not want to have to recycle the tapes. It would save us days worth of time if we didn't have to do this EVERY time.
lv2ski
Why do you have to recycle your tapes? I am not undestanding this part.
jmm
When we place our set of tapes in the tape library, we make sure the script will backup to the set just placed in the library. We make sure Retrospect reads all the tapes - that way it knows exactly what tapes are available. Then the backup server is started. It tries to poll each client. When it is finished "polling" a client the client's status reads "media" which indicates that Retrospect is having problems identifying or finding the correct media. This is the part were we end up having to recycle the tapes to get the backup server working correctly. Once the tapes have been recycled - the backup begins and works normally. lv2ski
That means your script is asking for different media. Maybe its just asking you for a new blank piece as the tapes are already full. Go to Configure/Backupsets then click on your backupset and get properties on your backupset. Then go to the members tab..... are they full? What does it say under summary....does it say it needs a new disk to continue the backup?
jmm
No the tapes are not all full. It is not asking for a new tape. Some times while backing up it asks for a new tape. This event is rare though. Usually the last tape has plenty of space to continue backing up the clients.
