1 SOLUTION TO: DR fails - error no backup device!

Hello,

I FOUND THE CAUSE/SOLUTION (IF this is your problem)

Problem Description:

------------------------------

Disaster recovery proceeds fine using bootable CD-R through all the setups UNTIL the point of restoring files from within RBE. Then it fails with a strange message or a message that no backup device is attached to the system!

If you Quit the Disaster recovery screen and while still in RBE select Configure->Devices.

This status screen says no backup devices are attached. Click the Environment tab and my CD-RW shows in the window BUT it is not in BOLD text and under the driver column no driver shows (because it is not active).

Product: Retrospect Backup Express version 5.6.132 (Hereafter called RBE)

OS Affected: WinXP Pro (most likely Home) and may affect some others too.

Backup Media: CD-R/CD-RW

Note: this may affect other media too so it is worth a read if the problem matches yours.

CAUSE:

-------------

During the Disaster recovery setup a temporary windows boot directory is created

on the boot device (hard drive usually C:) and used to start windows instead of the original. RBE is installed into the \DRWINNT.TMP\System32\Retro directory at the same time and eventually runs from there. The RBU.RPX file is "missing" from that dir. This is a file that contains info about backup devices. Without it RBE does not know how to control the CD-RW drive. In my case that is a Yamaha CRW3200EZ Eide drive.

SOLUTION: There are two solutions I've verified as working. One simple, one more difficult.

-----------------

NOTE1: IF you have installed an rdu update since purchasing your RBE in order to allow

RBE to "see" your backup device then you must first get the RBU.RPX file in that

rdu update from Dantz or where ever (ie download from the web site if you installed

networking during the setup or a friend etc.)

Note2: You must have The following settings in the Windows explorer active:

Under the Tools->Folder Options->View [advanced settings]

Select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions fo known file types".

Uncheck the box that says "Hide protected operating system files"

Click apply and/or ok until you get back out of the menu box.

Simple Solution:

1. Abort the disaster recovery in RBE and exit the program.

2. Run the Windows Explorer (Start->All Programs->Accessories).

Next you have two choices:

A. IF your \Program Files\Dantz\Retrospect directory is not damaged by the disaster. . .

a. navigate to that folder and right mouse click on the RBU.RPX file and select copy.

b. Navigate to the \DRWINNT.TMP\System32\Retro directory and right mouse

click and select paste. (or use drag n drop)

c. Proceed to step #3

B.Your \Program Files\Dantz\Retrospect directory IS damaged

a. insert your RBE install cd. If it autoruns click exit and cancel the install.

b. Navigate to the \English\Installer\roem directory on the cd.

c. Right mouse click on the RBU.RPX file and select copy.

d. Right mouse click and select paste to copy it to the dir. (or use drag n drop)

e. Proceed to step #3

3. Now start RBE again. The shortcut is under the Start->All Programs->Startup folder

4. Proceed with the disaster recovery normally.

Difficult Solution:

If the simple solution didn't work you might possibly get this to work.

1. Abort the disaster recovery in RBE and exit the program.

2. Install RBE from your original install CD. Have your Key number ready it will ask in step 10

DO NOT install it in the default dir (\Program Fils\Dantz\Retrospect).

Use something like \Dantz\Retrospect instead by changing this during the install.

Read ea screen carefully and you'll find a button to change on one of the screens.

The "normal default" will most assuredly get overwritten during the file copy process.

That will be a problem.

3. Run the windows explorer and go to the \DRWINNT.TMP\System32\Retro directory

4. Highlight the file dr.dat and right mouse click and select copy

5. Go to the dir where you just install RBE and right mouse click and select paste.

6. Do the same for the catalog file which your disaster recovery was made from which will be

named something like Backup Set A.rbc (If you are unsure then do all the .rbc files. if more than

one).

6. IN THE SAME DIR (DRWINNT.TMP\System32\Retro you will find a file named

restrospect.exe. Grab

it and drag it over to the desktop somewhere. Before letting go make sure that a little

arrow is present on the icon (we want to create a shortcut not move the exe file). If not

then press the ctrl shift or both at the same time until the icon has a little arrow on the

icon (not a plus sign). Let go. You may get asked if you want to create a shortcut and if

so then select that option.

7. right click on this desktop icon and select properties.

8. In the target box at the far right after all other characters and quotes, enter a space

followed by a -dr (example: . \. .\ retrospect.exe" -dr

9. Click apply , then ok.

10. Double click this desktop RBE icon and continue with the disaster recovery.

Note if it doesn't come up with a "Welcome to disaster recovery ..." screen

then you did something wrong creating the icon. Do step 6 on again. Don't

proceed you won't be doing a disaster recovery and things won't get cleaned up properly.

11. AFTER the whole recovery process has completed including a couple reboots.

Go back and delete this temp installation of RBE in \Dantz . . . Do NOT uninstall it from

the control panel. The registry info for the temp install was in the \DRWINNT.TMP dir tree

and will be gone now. Windows after the DR will no longer know about this temp RBE

installation so you can get rid of it.

Note: Originally this was an unanswered question in another thread BUT I'm posting it here new so it doesn't get lost. I believe it can help a number of persons besides myself.

Speculation:

The RBE could probably installed in the DRWINNT.TMP tree at step #1 then it would automatically be deleted in step #11 and you would have to do this manually.

I didn't test it that way though so I'm not explaining it that way.
