Exchange 2007 Mailbox Volume Keeps Prompting For Credentials

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm trying to do a brick level mailbox backup. I can get backups of the storage groups, but when I try to connect to the mailboxes I get prompted for credentials constantly. I have done the prereqs and moved all the .dlls from the exchangemapi folder to the WOW64 folder. Also modified the hosts file to comment out the IPv6 address and added in the exchange servers ip and host name and FQDN.

This is a CCR environment on Exchange. I'm pointing to the active node since Retrospect doesn't like pointing to the passive nodes for doing the backups.

Oh also saw on here someone started the client on the exchange server as the RBU. done that as well.

Anyone else had this problem and have gotten it corrected?

Is Retrospect able to show all of the mailboxes in the volumes list? Can you browse individual mailboxes? When you select "login as" what are you using for authentication? What groups is that RBU account a member off? Do you see the same thing if you run Retrospect with the admin account instead of RBU?

Does the RBU account have a mailbox that is visible to the GAL?

Hi Mayoff thanks for the reply:

Retrospect does not show any mailboxes at all, when I click on the mailboxes entry that's when I get prompted for credentials. The only thing I can expand is the storage volumes. Logging in I have tried both Use current RBU information and Domain Authentication. I've tried to entry the RBU entry under Domain Authentication as well as the primary Domain Admin Account. The retroback account is a member of Backup Operators, Domain Admins, Domain Users, Enterprise Admins and Exchange Organization Admins. RBU account does have a mailbox and is viewable from the GAL.

I'm in the process of a couple backups right now, when they are done I will let you know what I find running Retrospect with the Domain Admin account instead of my RBU account.

one thing that seemed to be the silver bullet for me on this issue was uninstalling both Visual C++ 2005 redistributables (x86 & x64) and then ONLY installing the x64 one back. someone else on the old forums found this to be the solution and, following his advice, i did the same on mine and it fixed the issue. this is assuming you also have right-clicked on your Exchange Server volume in the "volumes" dialog and set your "login as..." settings to a valid RBU, also.

CCR shouldn't have any effect on authentication, but yes, you do have to use the active node.
