Bad tape ?

Recommended Posts

Hi !

One of my backup tapes seems to be damaged.

I tried to transfer all files from the tape to a different backup set, but it does not seem to be able to read past the point of failure:

>06/02/2005 18:55:42: Transferring from England Daten und Bilde

>Device trouble: "2-England Daten und Bilde", error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Additional error information for device "Seagate Travan" [0:1],

>Sense > 71 00 03 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 31 00

>(Seagate |STT20000A |8.39)

>06/02/2005 23:34:29: 1 execution errors

>Duration: 04:31:47 (04:26:08 idle/loading/preparing)

After this error I only get a box stating transfer has failed, on pressing OK (the only button) the transfer is aborted.

When I try to verify the tape:

>Executing Verify at 06/02/2005 23:35

>To Backup Set England Daten und Bilde...

>Reported missing by user: "1-England Daten und Bilde"

>Trouble reading: "2-England Daten und Bilde" (3885993), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Trouble reading: "2-England Daten und Bilde" (3885993), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Trouble positioning: "2-England Daten und Bilde" (3885993), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Trouble reading: "2-England Daten und Bilde" (3885993), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Trouble positioning: "2-England Daten und Bilde" (0), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Trouble reading: "2-England Daten und Bilde" (0), error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Additional error information for device "Seagate Travan" [0:1],

>Sense > f0 00 03 00 00 00 08 0a 00 00 00 00 31 00

>(Seagate |STT20000A |8.39)

>Device trouble: "2-England Daten und Bilde", error -206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.)

>Additional error information for device "Seagate Travan" [0:1],

>Sense > 71 00 03 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 31 00

>(Seagate |STT20000A |8.39)

>2 files were not verified

>07/02/2005 09:41:06: 9 execution errors

>Remaining: 23910 files, zero KB

>Completed: 1151 files, 31.8 GB

>Performance: 54.2 MB/minute

>Duration: 10:05:25 (00:04:54 idle/loading/preparing)

Again after this error the verification is aborted, it does not ask for the next tape.

I have tried cleaning the drive with a cleaning tape, to no avail.

Does anyone know what I can do ?

I only want to recover all files which can successfully be read from the tape, and then move on to the next.

Thanks,

Hosni

Hi

That is the problem with tape. If a section of the tape is damaged badly enough there is no way to move on past the damaged section. Everything after that point will be unretrievable. A data recovery service may be able to get the data for you.

sorry

Nate
