ccrawford
I am trying to us my existing backup sets that I was using in Retrospect 5 in OS 9. The problems is, when I go to backup using these sets in OS X, Retrospect wants to backup everything again! Is there a way to prevent this? I just want to append my existing backup sets. AmyJ
When you moved to OS X, the operating system assigned inode information to each and every file. When Retrospect saw the files again, the unix information had changed. Retrospect properly matched the files and scheduled them for backup. Once the files have been backed up, they will match for future sessions.
ccrawford
So I am going to have to backup everything again?
CallMeDave
Quote: So I am going to have to backup everything again? Yes. You changed operating systems. This is not a trivial thing. The new operating system presents the files differently then the old operating system did. This is part of the price you're paying for changing your OS. Drishmung
It is a pity though that Retrospect can't just back up the changed metadata. This happens moderately often after all. If I change the file permission on a multi GB file, I really don't need to back up the whole file---just the metadata.
CallMeDave
>>If I change the file permission on a multi GB file, I really don't need to back up the whole file Correct. But the move from a file having _no_ permission data to a file having a _particular_ permission value requires Retrospect to get a copy of this new, meta-data rich file. Just changing a file's permissions to a different value does _not_ require it to be backed up again; Retrospect will store that information in the Snapshot. Once you're working full-time in OS X you will not see this issue again. Dave
