Using Backup Sets in OS X that were created in OS 9 - Retrospect wants to backup EVERYTHING again!

Recommended Posts

When you moved to OS X, the operating system assigned inode information to each and every file.

When Retrospect saw the files again, the unix information had changed. Retrospect properly matched the files and scheduled them for backup.

Once the files have been backed up, they will match for future sessions.

>>If I change the file permission on a multi GB file, I really don't need to back up the whole file

Correct.

But the move from a file having _no_ permission data to a file having a _particular_ permission value requires Retrospect to get a copy of this new, meta-data rich file.

Just changing a file's permissions to a different value does _not_ require it to be backed up again; Retrospect will store that information in the Snapshot.

Once you're working full-time in OS X you will not see this issue again.
