janbarzgmx.de
Hello, if under preferences -> notification -> email an email account is defined and the button 'Send Test E-Mail' is clicked I receive an error message 'Email notification failed: error -535 ( backup client: network unavailable)'. The email account settings are definately correct and according to the online knowledge base a different error would show if these were not correct. All clients defined work and removing all clients does not solve the problem either. Help would be highly appreciated. Mayoff
It sounds like a general networking error when trying to reach the email server. Can this computer see the mail server over the network?
janbarzgmx.de
Hello, thank you for the quick response. The computer with 7.7 professional can both ping the smtp server as well as send emails using outlook. Note the smtp server resides in the internet and not in the local network. Could it be that: - Only smtp servers in the intranet or subnet are supported? or - Professional does not support email notifications? Thank you and regards User DE
Mayoff
Yes, being in a different location could be causing problems for the connection. http://kb.dantz.com/article.asp?article=9636&p=
rhwalker
what happens if you enter the SMTP server by IP address rather than by fqdn ? is this SMTP AUTH or plain SMTP? Using the standard port (25)?
janbarzgmx.de
Hello, again thank you for the response from all. Here are the results: - Keeping the described settings and changing the logging level to 7: soctPreDispose: maximum queue depth was 0 soctSetThread: socket thread now 0x338 SMTP: opening addr 213.165.64.20 smtpOpen: connecting using port 19.202 soccOpen: socket send buffer size is 65.536 soccOpen: socket recv buffer size is 65.536 soccOpen: connect() failed with error 10061 smtpOpen: connection failed using port 19.202, trying port 6.400 soccOpen: socket send buffer size is 65.536 soccOpen: socket recv buffer size is 65.536 soccOpen: connect() failed with error 10061 smtpOpen: connection failed using port 6.400 smtpSend: "QUIT" soctPreDispose: maximum queue depth was 0 - Changing the name of the mail server to its IP address listed above: soctSetThread: socket thread now 0x338 SMTP: opening addr 213.165.64.20 smtpOpen: connecting using port 54.528 soccOpen: socket send buffer size is 65.536 soccOpen: socket recv buffer size is 65.536 soccCallback: kNetSelectorConnect failed, error 10060 smtpOpen: connection failed using port 54.528 smtpSend: "QUIT" soctPreDispose: maximum queue depth was 1 Thus the problem to me seems to be that Retrospect is not using port 25. Question: Is there any way I can specify Retrospect to use port 25 to connect to the smtp server? Regards, User DE

poorman
Thus the problem to me seems to be that Retrospect is not using port 25. Question: Is there any way I can specify Retrospect to use port 25 to connect to the smtp server? Regards, User DE I don't see where in this trace it says what port Retrospect connected to. It says it used high-numbered ports to connect FROM, but that's what I'd expect. Do let us know if the :25 changes the behavior. -- Pete
Guest
The IP address listed is for mail.gmx.net. Perhaps this ISP requires TLS + SMTP AUTH: Trying 213.165.64.20... Connected to mail.gmx.net. Escape character is '^]'. 220 mail.gmx.net GMX Mailservices ESMTP {mp057} ehlo example.com 250-mail.gmx.net GMX Mailservices 250-8BITMIME 250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES 250-SIZE 250-AUTH=LOGIN PLAIN 250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN 250 STARTTLS quit 221 2.0.0 GMX Mailservices {mp057} Connection closed by foreign host. If so, enable Authentication in Retrospect's Prefernces->Notification->E-mail (My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication)
janbarzgmx.de
Hello All, thank you for the responses and the support. I found the cause for not being able to send emails. McAffee Anti Virus Enterprise 8 offers the ability to block certain ports under certain circumstances. This was apparantely recently enabled. While applications like Outlook etc are allowed, Retrospect is blocked. Disabling Mc Affee allows sending of the emails. I do apologize for not checking the Anti Virus logs earlier and again thank you for the help. Regards, User DE
