jaypublix
has anyone else noticed that clicking "stop retrospect engine" in system preference does not stop the retrospect engine? The sys pref gui shows the engine as running, as does activity monitor.... Does anyone have another workaround? I tried unloading retrospect using launchtl and got an error too... How did retro break this? It used to work before the latest round of bug fixes/new bug introductions....
Maser
Depending on what the engine is doing at the time, it can take 10 minutes to "stop" the engine. Give it time -- if the engine is free, it stops quickly. If it's in the middle of a backup or something, it'll take 10 minutes.
jaypublix
retro wasn't doing anything at the time (well, at least nothing that I was aware of, like backing up)... this behavior seems to have changed recently, it used to stop pretty quickly... I just tested it, where I started the engine, then stopped the engine. Engine started quickly, took but it took a few minutes for the engine to stop, and retro wasn't doing anything.... thanks for the tip.... GMRMacBackup
I've had the Retro engine ignore the stop command from the Engine System Preferences panel, I usually have luck with a Force Quit of the process from the Activity Monitor application. In my experience it requires 10 seconds or less to comply using that method, your mileage may vary because of hardware differences.
rhwalker
Things can get left in a messy state if you do the force quit of the process. Not sure I would make that a habit, and reserve it for really bad situations. Communication with the engine needs to be fixed. Russ
