cmykdesign
We currently use retrospect 6.1.230 on a G5 Xserve. The way we use retrospect owes a lot to "how it's always been" so I'm looking to sense-check our policy and see if there's a better way to do it. Right now, we have a backup HD for each day of the working week so we have 5 complete backups of the server. Part of my problem is that the drives are not large enough to each carry the full content of the server plus the incremental data from ongoing backup sessions. What this suggests to me is that I need to take a chunk of the old data which is rarely accessed and back that up once before excluding it from the daily drives. We have a small RAID box that would be perfect for this purpose. Is there an obvious problem with this approach? Also, should I be using the archive option (without move) rather than backup and, if I do, how can I exclude archived files from the daily backups? Hope I've not rambled too much! Thanks for reading
Lennart_T
How often do you recycle the backups? Hard drives are real cheap today. How about buying larger drives? Retrospect 8 allows "grooming", which removes the oldest snapshots from the drives.
cmykdesign
I hadn't, to be fair, even heard of recycling until yesterday so the answer is not at all. I know drives are relatively cheap but we have a set of drives here I would rather not waste. I've been looking at the version 8 trial today and admit it may be the way to go (in spite of the PPC speed problems).
