metro305
Good day all! Can I speed up the "building snapshot" process? I have defragmented my drives and added more memory and it still seems to take forever to build a snapshot. Look at this Code: - 1/12/2006 6:12:20 PM: Copying DATA on DATA (E:) 1/13/2006 1:57:36 AM: Snapshot stored, 944.9 MB 1/13/2006 2:02:20 AM: Execution completed successfully Completed: 25063 files, 5.1 GB Performance: 194.2 MB/minute Duration: 07:49:59 (07:23:33 idle/loading/preparing) Here are some technical details I have two identical servers a primary(production file server) and backup(Retrospect backup server). The backup server performs a duplicate job from the primary to itself. Afterwards we run the tape backup which takes anywhere from 9 -15 hours. Hardware/Software Details Pentium 4 2.8 533FSB 1GB DDR RAM 749.71 GB RAID 5 (4x200GB HDs) CERC ATA 100 4 CH RAID Dell Driver 6.41.2.32 Certance LTO-3 Cettance Driver 1.9.0.0 Adaptec 39320A Adaptec Driver 3.0.0.0 Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Service Pack 1 (build 3790) Any help would be appreciated and how to improve this backup job or speed up/tweak Retrospect to reduce snapshot build time. -metro305
Lennart_T
Yikes! That's a LONG time! Anyway, how many files are there on disk E:? (I assume there are a LOT more than the 25063 files actually backed up?) In order to create a snapshot, Retrospect need to get the permissions on EVERY file on the disk, backed up or not. metro305
A little under 1.8 million files!! -MJB
Lennart_T
OK, we have a fairly new Windows server with 330583 files. Building the snapshot takes about an hour. 330000 times 5.5 is about 1800000, so I would expect building the snapshot would take 5.5 hours on a similar server. metro305
Thanks for the information. I hope they can speed things up somehow. I know if I have faster drives that would help. Again thanks! -MJB
Lennart_T
Hi. Yes, faster disks would probably help. I read that Dantz is in the hands of Microsoft on this one: The calls to get the file permissions etc are slow and akward. Regards Lennart
