error -205 (lost access to storage medium)

Hi

I'm having trouble with getting Retrospect to backup to DVD.

Each day I check the script and media and it says that the script is valid and the media is ready.

But when it starts the backup I get the following error.

Device trouble: "1-Nightly Backup Set", error -205 (lost access to storage medium)

The DVD drive is a Ricoh DVD+RW MP5125 version 1.51

(which Retrospect claims to have full support for)

Retrospect 6.5.366

Retrospect Driver Update 4.6.106

The backup computer is running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 with all the Windows updates.

Autorun has been turned off, and Retrospect is the only application installed.

The computer is not used for anything except to run the backup at 11pm.

The files being backed up are stored on the server running Small Business Server 2000.

When the backup computer was first setup, the backup worked for the first week, and since then has failed with the above error -205.

Previously the DVD drive and Retrospect were installed on the Office Administrators Computer, but the backup was only working occasionally and of late would usually fail with the 205 error.

Due to this, I set up the backup computer mentioned above so that there was no chance of any other applications interfering with the backup.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Nate

The Media being used is Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+RW 2.4X

ASPI wasn't installed.

After installing it, ASPICHK returns the following

What is it referring to where it says that no host adapters have been detected?

Is it looking for an Adaptec IDE controller?

The DVD drive is IDE, and is using the motherboards IDE controller.

Retrospect is still reporting the same error -205 (lost access to media) after ASPI has been installed. Does it need to find a host adapter to work?

Thanks

Hi

ASPI can be used with any IDE/or SCSI adapter so it should be loading. The fact that it isn't may indicate some problems in the driver for your IDE controller. My hunch is that those are the same problems causing the -205 errors.

The Retrospect log should also indicate that ASPI failed to load.

Can you give some specifics on the IDE controller you are using? If it is from Intel try uninstalling the Intel application accelerator application.

Hi,

Here's the most recent failure in the Retrospect Log.

I can't find any reference to ASPI in it though.

The IDE Controller listed in Device Manager is an:

Intel® 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

Also listed are the:

Primary IDE Channel

Secondary IDE Channel

Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller

These 3 all use Microsoft drivers.

The Computer is a Digital 3500 with a slimline case.

The motherboard is branded as a Digtial and uses the Intel 440LX chipset.

I can't find and don't remember installing the Intel application accelerator application.

Would this be specific to motherboards manufactured by Intel?

I noticed that under the Secondary IDE Channel's properties that the Transfer mode for Device 0 was set to PIO only, while the Transfer mode for Device 1 was set to DMA if available.

Would this have any affect on things? Or do CD/DVD drives usually operate in PIO mode.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem with my DVD burner.

I'm using a Plextor PX-708A.

ASPIchk shows aspi drivers to be installed OK.

Retrospect 6.5.366

Retrospect Driver Update 4.6.106

Running WinXP Pro.

When I check the environment in the Devices tool, it shows the Plextor as a DVDR PX-708A Firmware version 1.03 and the Driver as Plextor DVD RW (1.56)

The burner is on the secondary IDE channel as the slave, running in DMA mode 2.

Any ideas why I am getting the error - 205 (lost access to storage medium) message?

Thanks for any ideas.

While browsing some of the other posts I came accross this

The nt passthru/aspi setting is in "Retrospect Secret Preferences" under "Execution" accessed by typing <ctrl>, <alt>, P, P. Nate is suggesting that you take note of what the setting is now, and then switch to the other. I would also add that it is best to not make any other changes (i.e. media, etc) so you can see if this change helps.

Basically, you need to go into preferences and then the execution screen, at which point if you do the above you will get to the "Retrospect Secret Preferences" screen. When I checked the setting to use the NT/2000 passthrough instead of ASPI and restarted 6.5 all of my difficulties disappeared. YMMV grin.gif

Hi

The other classic cause of this problem is other burning software getting in the way. Can you disable the other burning software on the system? Are you giving Retrospect blank disks to format or have they beem previously formatted with another application? Blank is best.

Thanks

Nate

Hi

The only things installed are Win 2000 Pro and Retrospect. I haven't installed anything else.

The disks were orignially used in the same DVD drive in another PC, but that was also being used as a workstation. I moved the DVD drive to another PC with a fresh install of Win 2k Pro so I could test it with no other programs installed and without the PC being used for anything else to see if the problems being experience were related to the DVD drive and/or Retrospect, or whether one of the other applications on the workstation was causeing interference.

The backup has worked occasionally, both on the original PC and a couple of times on the second PC.

So the disks have only ever been used in this DVD drive and only with Retrospect.

Thanks

You could try upgrading the firmware for your writer. The current version is 1.68 and has improvements for writing 4 and 8 speed media. (See excerpt from readme.txt file below)

Firmware Revision history

Modified Point with V.1.68:

1:Write strategy for 8X DVD+R media added.

Firmware Revision history

Modified Point with V.1.64:

1:DVD+RW 4X write quality improved.

Firmware Revision history

Modified Point with V.1.51:

1:Write strategy for 4x DVD+R media improved.

2:OPC error possibility with 4x DVD+Rmedia improved.

Hello,

I had the same problem and I think I have isolated it down to bad media. Basically I backed up my music collection, and during the sixth DVD of backup set A I received the error. I needed to backup to my second set, so I went ahead and made my backup set B without problems. Then, I decided to try my first set again using the same media and I had the same problem on the sixth disk. I replaced the sixth disk and it worked great.

I am using a LiteON LDW411s on a Windows XP Pro machine in an external USB connected case, and for the most part it works great with Retrospect.

HTH,

DaveR
