aesmith
I have had this problem before the newest version of Retrospect but now it is an issue as the computer it is happening on needs to be backed up. What I am finding is one WinXP SP 2 computer on our network that has a nightly proactive backup done on it (running 7.6.107 client)is freezing the Retrospect backup system. It seems to do the first backup ok but after that when it tries to matching the backup on our NAS to the client. When I say freeze what is happening is the executing backup will just sit there saying matching and the backup set and use about %95+ of the cpu and never complete. You cannot stop the executing backup either. Other backups can run but do so a bit slower than usual due tot he load this lockup seems to be putting on the system. I can only stop the freeze by killing retrospect from the task manager. So far I can't find anything wrong with the client computer and it works fine other than the backup issue. Is there some sort of diagnostic or more verbose logging I can turn on that might help? Any suggestions are welcomed.
Mayoff
Try turing off the option to backup open files to see if it helps. How much RAM is on the backup server? What operating system is running the backup?
aesmith
It is Win2003 SBS standard SP1 . We have the Retrospect server Value pack installed on it as well, that includes open file backup addon btw. There is 3 Gigs of RAM on the server. aesmith
I turned off open file backup and it did not lock up but stalled and had to be stopped by the stop time. There were several errors reported with sharing violations and directories not found. See below. Mayoff
I would turn off the specific stop time so you can see what Retrospect was doing when the backup actually stopped. The above errors will not cause a hang or stall.
aesmith
Thanks Robin, but how will I tell exactly what it was doing? I already know it was getting stuck saying: Matching Saying Remaining 0 files zero KB
Mayoff
When you look in the activity monitor it will show you the status. I already know it was getting stuck saying:Matching Saying Remaining 0 files zero KB Did you actually see this after turning off open file backup? aesmith
Is there no diagnostics I can turn on, either on the client or server to narrow the issue down? I really need to start getting this computer backed up properly.
