rpoulton
Hi Folks - Yes, I've read all the notes and watched the video, but I still don't know if I just have to backup Exchange 2003 Mailboxes, or Mailboxes AND 'First storage Group' AND 'Exchange Server'. Doing everything seems to at least double my storage needs. Please advise Thanks Rich
Mayoff
Doing everything gives you the ability to do a disaster recovery of the server or the restore of an individual mailbox or message.
rpoulton
Thanks - So Backing up just the storage group and not the mailboxes would be an all or nothing restore, and with mailboxes only I wouldn't be able to restore the configuration and public folders ? Mayoff
Basically yes. If you are able to configure your server to use the recovery storage group, then you can skip mailbox backups.
rpoulton
WOW - OK I wish there was some better docs on this To clarify becasue I'm dumb: First Storage group backup - I can restore either the entirety of Exchange (including all mailboxes) or nothing Mailbox Backup - I can restore individual mailboxes and messages, but not how I had Exchange configured Correct ? What do most users do ?
Mayoff
This is correct. Most users do both. BUT users of the recovery storage group (check with Microsoft on setup) only need to backup the Storage Group.
