error -3422 (unknown) when backing up public folders

Recommended Posts

Our exchange server has a number of public folders which contain emails and posts. During the backup the majority of these folders are not backed up successfully. Here is an example of the retrospect log:

Completed: 38 files, 337 KB

All of the errors include a long hexidecimal string like the ones above, though each is slightly different. I don't know what this means.

The only message logged in the Windows Event Viewer is a warning that the Retrospect backup completed with 116 errors.

Before attempting this backup I created a new retrospect user account and assigned it to the Domain Users, Administrators, Domain Admins, and Backup Operators groups. I updated the account information in Retrospect's preferences, restarted Retrospect, unregistered and re-registered the exchange add-on module and restarted retrospect again. As you can see, the problem still occurs.

This error has only occurred in the public folders and only in those that contain emails or posts. User mailboxes and private folders have been backing up consistantly with no problems, as well as public contact lists, calendars and task lists.

I would welcome any insight or suggestions.

Thanks,

Andrew

TITLE: "- 3420 Unknown" when backing up Exchange Mailboxes

Topic

When running a backup of MS Exchange using the exchange add-on, you may encounter -3420 unknown errors on certain mailboxes.

Discussion:

Over time exchange mailboxes can may become corrupt for a number of reasons. Retrospect can run into unknown errors after a mailbox has become corrupted. Typically this will be one of many mailboxes that gets this unknown error, where the rest of the mailboxes are backing up perfectly fine.

In order to work around this -3420 unknown error, you can create a new mailbox for that particular user and then import the .pst file into the new mailbox. This takes care of the mailbox corruption and should bypass the -3420 error.

Creating a new mailbox in exchange:

It sounds like there are some corrupted messages in the public folders generating these errors.
