Won't do differential backups

Recommended Posts

OK here is my problem

Retrospect 7.5 multi server running on Winxp SP2.

Backing up a win2003 server 7.5 client. Did the first back up to disk (full system backup)

C: volume and a 120 GB raid 5 everything worked fine. Second scheduled backup kicked off and it backed only the changes in C but copied the entire raid 5 volume again.

Can some one explain this? I can provide more info and scripts if needed.

TIA

Mark

Retrospect does not do differential backups, and it never has.

If the NTFS permissions for files have changed on the RAID 5, then those files with changed permissions would get recopied.

Try going to the script options and turn off the option to copy NTFS permissions from files. When you do this, what happens to the total number of files that need to be copied?

  • 3 weeks later...

I noticed the same thing after upgrading.

My solution was to turn off the READ ONLY option on the Restrospect client.

I wanted to leave that option on for my critical servers as an extra layer of protection, but when I do it seems to do a Full backup everytime.

BTW, tech support told me to turn off copying NTFS permissions. Not only did that suggestion not prevent the problem I was having, even if it did I NEED to backup file and folder permissions!

Good luck!
