PowerMac G5 with Sony DW-Q28A, drive not recognized, configure crashes

I have a PowerMac G5 with the Sony DW-Q28A DVD+-RW drive. According to the compatibility list this device is supported but Retrospect Desktop 6.1.126 does not recognize this drive at all. Two attempts on configuring the drive just ended up with Retrospect not responding. Forcing the application to quit resulted in a complete system crash.

 

I run Mac OS X 10.4.3 (8F46) on a Dual PowerMac G5 2.3 GHz with 2,5 GB RAM, two Serial-ATA drives and an external Maxtor firewire drive (backing up to the Maxtor works).

 

I'm using Verbatim 16x DVD-R media. The media works fine when writing DVDs with other applications.

 

Does anyone know why Retrospect won't recognize the drive?

I am having the same problem and crash log results with an NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A from LaCie.

 

Retrospect sees the drive, but when you insert any media you get Retrospect (not responding).

 

Force quit results in a system crash and grey screen of death.

 

I have two of these drives acting the same way on G5s and 1.25Ghz G4s.

 

Only Retrospect fails this way, Toast works just fine.

 

However, on slower G4's ( dual 800 and 800 iMac) there is no problem. It works.

 

Have you tried your device on a slower machine?

Well

 

My DVD drives are external d2 drives from LaCie. They will not help me trouble shoot the problem because "it is a Retrospect Problem".

 

It may very well be a Retrospect problem, because the drive only fails running Retrospect 6.1.

 

I will remove the drive from the exteranl case and try it as an internal.

 

I will try it with Retrospect 6.0 and perhaps version 5 to see what happens.

 

Sorry I could not be of more help, maybe someone from Dantz might have a suggestion?!?

My Configure->Devices->Device Status is as follows:

 

Firewire-A _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A 1.01 NEC DVD DL (5.12) <--This is the Drive that crashs.

Firewire-A PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-108 1.14 PIONEER DVD DL (5.12) <--This drive is fine

ATAPI-B:0:0 PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105 1.30 PIONEER DVD/CD-RW (5.12) <--This drive is fine

What other firewire devices do you have attached to the machine?

Have you tried using Retrospect 6.0? It will be very helpful if we can isolate this to Retrospect 6.1.

 

Then current version of Retrospect is 6.1.126 and Retrospect update 6.1.2.102

Nate,

 

I have tried the NEC ND-3540A both alone and with other FW devices. It fails in both configurations

using 6.1.126 and the 6.1.2.102 driver update.

 

I have installed 6.0 and the last 6.6.xxx driver and it failed as well.

 

I cannot run it with Retrospect 5, the drive was never supported with 5.

 

The interesting thing is that the drive runs fine with other applications like DVD Studio Pro and Toast.

 

The drive is also fine with Retrospect on some old G4 based machines.

I have now tested this drive on five systems and found it to be very consistent.

The drive works on all systems with Toast.

The drive works on iMac G4s and slow (800Mhz) G4 Towers with Retrospect 6 and 6.1.

The drive fails on G5 towers and fast (1.25Ghz) G4 Towers with Retrospect 6.0 and 6.1.

All with the latest driver update(s)

 

I guess I must accept the fact that this drive will not work one any of my G5s until Dantz fixes their driver.

says the drive is Qualified and I purchased two of them with the confidence that they would work.

 

"Qualified - Passed extensive in-house certification. Storage device is fully supported."

 

This is what we in the business call "a wee bit of a lie".

 

It would be nice to be able to report this directly to Dantz Support , see if they can recreate the problem and maybe get a fix in the next driver update.

It isn't a lie.

 

 

 

All qualified devices are tested in great detail with many media types. (We also test on fast G5s) Our tests showed your drive worked perfectly. You would be suprised by how much time it actually takes to get a driver built and tested.

 

 

 

There are a lot of possibilities here. Do all of your systems have the same OS?

 

 

 

I will be happy to submit logs to our engineers for review. Please do the following to generate logs:

 

 

 

1)Update to Retrospect 6.1 + the latest driver update available on the updates site

 

2)Move/delete your Retrospect preferences folder

 

3)Launch Retrospect, open configure->devices->device status and tell Retrospect to ignore all devices except for the problem device.

 

4)On the special tab in the Retrospect directory, option click the preferences button and turn on SCSI logging.

 

5)Restart Retrospect and run an operation that will cause the failure you have reported.

 

 

 

This should capture detailed device info when the trouble occurs. The information will be in the /Library/Preferences/Retrospect/Operations log file. Please send the entire file to pacrimsupport@dantz.com .

 

 

 

I recommend disonnecting all FW devices before creating this log.

Hi Nate

 

I have submitted the Operations Log as you requested.

 

All five tested systems are OSX4.3

 

All systems have had just the LaCie d2 burner attached to the Firewire chain.

 

All systems have had Retrospect 6.1.126 installed with driver 6.1.2.102.

 

The iMac 1.25Ghz works fine.

The Dual 800Mhz G4 works fine.

The Dual 1.25Gz G4 fails.

The Dual 2.0Ghz G5 fails.

The Dual 2.5Ghz G5 fails.

 

Failure occurs upon insertion of CD or DVD media.

 

We get the Loading--- message, then the gears turning icon, then the spinning beach ball of death.

 

My regular test system is the Dual 1.25 G4 and I have gone so far as to erase & install OSX 10.4, then upgrade to 10.4.3, install Retrospect&Driver, no other apps installed. This configuration also hangs.

The error occurs with all supported media.

 

As LaCie advertised, "Records to Double Layer DVD+R, Dual Layer DVD-R, DVD±R/RW and CD-R/RW"

 

We would not expect the device to work with upsupported media.

 

Why would you even bother to test it with unsupported media?

First off ...

This is an invalid comparison as Retrospect uses a completely different technology than Toast to write to optical discs.

Retrospect uses Packet Writing:

- Allows you to keep the session open so that you can use the full capacity of your CD/DVD.

- Allows you to read/restore from your CD/DVD even while the session is open.

 

Toast uses Track-At-Once (among other things):

- Need to close the session in order to read/access data on your CD/DVD but no longer writeable once the session is closed.

- You can keep the session open to use the full capacity of the disc but you can't read the data on your disc.

 

So basically, you're comparing apples to oranges.

 

Second ...

This is an issue specific to the media speeds as NateW reported and Lacie has confirmed that these errors are less likely to occur with slower speed media.

We will be updating our device knowledge base to reflect this.
