Given that RS6.5 'filesharing' unattended backup [sic, sorry this has to be sic as it's NEVER worked here] is unservicable, I elected to install the Client directly on my (Linux) server.

  • [root@systa 22-retrospect-client]# dir

retroclient-65.rpm

[root@systa 22-retrospect-client]# rpm -ivh retroclient-65.rpm

Adding RETROSPECT_HOME to system profile and login scripts...Done!

Before attempting to use any of the GUI components of the Retrospect Client,

you must have both the RETROSPECT_HOME and DISPLAY variables set. The

RETROSPECT_HOME variable should point to /usr/local/dantz/client. We have

modified your /etc/profile and /etc/.login files to set this value for future

logins. The retrospect client launched as part of this installation process

will also have this variable set. However, if you kill that client and

restart it without logging out, you will need to set these variables manually.

This went without a hitch but the (M$) workstation-installed main RS6.5 software does not apparently see the server-installed Retrospect Client... (Piton broadcast etc etc)

I later found this stuff in the server's MESSAGE log:

I haven't ever used the Client stuff before so you can measure the depth of my gathering desperation over quite how badly RS's performance, as a product, seems to have degraded.

RS6.5, here at my site, is so blighted it beggars my belief;~/ Retrospect used to be so uttermostly reliably solid that it was always recommended to my own customers. I will have to re-appraise my considerations of many years' standing, particularly for the manufacturer's level of support.

I can only assume that Dantz is effectively on an extended holiday break or something. Tomorrow I will call the ever-helpful David and Onno and maybe find out just what the heck has happened to, what used to be, an outstandingly robust product.

best wishes, Robert

Apparently having my own Linux gateway/website/email server counts with Dantz marketing as being a site that can afford to pay out the sort of money the big boys spend on their IT;~/

I am not allowed (commercial/marketing reasons) to backup a few files directly from my (Linux) server to the master (W2KPRO) workstation with the RS Professional package. To do this very simple thing means I must purchase an upgrade to a server package... and it's quite expensive. I must continue to utilise the conventional networking fileshare/volumes share method.

This is the reason for the above failure.

I have now uninstalled the Retrospect Client's RPM from my server.

best wishes, Robert
