jordannolan
I take the last Friday of the month's tape and archive it. Then I rotate the media and bring in a new tape. Since every MTWTF I am overwriting the previous MTWTF my EOM backups don't have a catalog on the drive and I need to recreate the catalog. On a 60 gig tape, this can take up to 5-6 hours. I would like it if Retrospect did the same thing that Windows NT Server does and put the catalog on the end of the tapes backup set for quick retrieval. If I want a file from a NT backup from 5 years ago I put in the tape and run the catalog in NT backup which takes about 2-3 minutes. Having the catalog on the hard drive instead of on the tape realy ends up costing me more time in the long run than it saves by having catalogs on the hard disk. This year I had to restore about 15 times from NT tapes and each restore took about 10 minutes to catalog and select the files. That is a total of 150 minutes (2.5 hours) for 15 restores vs the 6 hours for this one restore with Retrospect.
