AmyJ
Is the drive plugged directly into the Firewire port on your computer or is it connected to a Firewire hub? If the drive is plugged into a hub, try plugging it directly into the computer. How is the drive formatted? You can find this information by doing a "Get Info" on the drive from the desktop. In order for this drive to work properly, it should be formatted as HFS Extended (HFS +) by the OS X system. Make sure you have all the latest system updates from Apple through Software Update.
