Advice on products for our network

Recommended Posts

We have the following network in our business:

2 Macs (OS9)

4 PCs (various OSs)

We use some software called 'Dave' for networking the Macs to the PCs but this only works one-way i.e. we can see the PCs on the Macs and transfer data but we can not see the files on the Macs from the PCs.

We have a HP DAT drive on the PCs currently for backing up but the problem is backing up the macs.

What Retrospect software would be most appropriate to help us over this problem? Or do we have to have a separate backup drive on the macs!

Ideally we want to put Retrospect on the PCs and communicate with the Macs for the backing up etc.

Any reasonable suggestions gratefully received.

Providing all machines are in the same subnet, you can use Retrospect Professional, which comes with 2 client licences (with additional available for purchase).

If the machines are in different subnets or you're using a tape library (rather then a single tape drive), you'll need the Single Server edition, which comes with unlimited clients and advanced networking.

If you have any Windows server OS's (NT Server, 2000 Server, 2000 Advanced Server, 2003 Server) in your environment, you'll need Single Server or Multi Server. Single Server will backup a server OS if Retrospect is installed on the local machine. Multi Server will backup server OS as clients.

Hi AmyJ,

All the machines are on the same subnet, so the Professional version should suffice. But will this get over our one-way communications problems between mac and pc? We are using a single tape drive which comes off the back of one of the pc's.

Do you suggest we get the PC or MAC version of the software...

Thanks

Andy

The Retrospect Client software can be installed on Macintosh and PC clients - allowing Retrospect to access them directly through a TCP/IP connection.

With the Professional version, the clients must be in the same subnet as the Retrospect 'server.' With Single Server and Multi Server, Retrospect can look for clients in multiple subnets.
