TQE
Hi. Using a beige G3-160MB RAM (OS 9.2.2) to run Retrospect version 5.0.238. Backing up the G3 as well as two other machines on the network - a G4 and a G3 Powerbook, both running OS X. Was running like this fine until one day about 3 weeks ago it started giving an out of memory error at the point that it attempts to scan the networked machines. Still backs up the G3 fine. I have restarted the G3 and have upped Retrospect's application memory up to 10000K per the Dantz FAQ but it still will not back up the clients. Help! AmyJ
Unless you are backing up to a File Backup set, changing the memory requirements will do more harm then good. When scanning and matching, Retrospect is using available system memory - not application memory. OS X machines have 10's of thousands of file in a base installation - not including installed applications. It will require a lot of memory to scan the files and then match them against all the files that are already in the backup set. Your choices are: 1. Try a new backup set. An empty (or small) backup set will require less memory 2. Backup less data from these machines through the use of Selectors or Subvolumes 3. Increase the physical memory in the machine running the backup 4. Move the backup to an OS X machine, which has much better memory management
