kohster
I've got a customer here who is trying to use Retrospect Desktop 6.0 on a Windows server to back up a bunch of clients. The server is located in our data center at one end of campus on a single IP subnet, and the clients are located on 2 other IP subnets. The server seems to be unable to see the clients via multicast, even when the TTL is adjusted up to 32 or higher (there are 3 router hops between the server and the clients). All routers are running PIM sparse-mode on their interfaces, and I can see other multicast groups make it all the way from end to end. However, the 224.1.0.38 group is not propagated past the first router in the data center. Is the multicast feature on Retrospect only intended for local subnet backup purposes, or should it work in the described environment? Thanks! Let me know if more information is needed. AmyJ
Multicast will only work in the local subnet. You'll need to use Single-Server or Multi-Server in order to use Subnet Broadcast (for subnets outside of the local subnet).
kohster
Thanks for the reply! It seems a little misleading to allow the TTL to be adjusted upward if the multicast traffic is not going to be used outside of the local subnet, but oh well. At least I have something to tell my customer. Thanks again!
