I am using Retrospect 5.0.238 in OSX 10.2.6 and am getting this error message "Can't save catalog, error -45 (file locked)" when doing a recycle backup from my boot HD to a second HD I use exclusively for backups. The "Combined File Backup Set" is 18.59 GB and the "Backup Set Catalog" is 46.9 MB. This happened at the very end of the backup run and there were no other errors. I'd be grateful for any thoughts?

A Combined File Backup Set does not have a seperate Catalog file. Why did you refer to them in this way (I'm grasping for clues here...)?

There have been a handful of users reporting this, although I've never seen it on any of my backups.

- How many files in the Backup Set? (look at the Summary tab in Configure->Backup Sets->Configure)

- What does the Options field of that same Summary tab show?

Please describe your hardware setup, such as the model of Macintosh, the type of "second HD," etc.

Is there any reason to suspect that this second drive may have experienced intermittend communication with the computer itself?

Remember, you can't always trust the wording of a programe's error; there may well be another reason.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response.

Under the "Configure" tab of the main Retrospect directory, if you choose "Backup Sets", select a backup set and choose "Configure". In the next window select "Options" under Catalog and you'll see a "Combine" button (move catalog into the same file as data). When I created this backup set it generated separate File backup and Catalog files. I'm tempted to combine the two files, but will wait on your thoughts. As you say, in previous versions of Retrospect there was only a single file.

Used: 18.6G for 122,539 files.

Options field: Normal, Separate catalog.

The computer in question is a dual 1.25Ghz PowerMac G4 Mac with 1 GB RAM running OSX 10.2.6. It has 2 internal ATA 120 GB hard drives. One drive is partitioned for OSX (110 GB) and OS9 (10 GB). The other drive is not partitioned. I have no reason to believe that either drive is malfunctioning. I recently ran disk utility to check and repair disk permissions and only a couple minor errors were corrected, none of which appered to have anything to do with Retrospect. Please ask me for any other information that might be helpful.

Thanks again,

With 122,000 files you probably can't combine the Backup Set again; there's some magic cutoff where you can, based on the number of files, so trying and failing to combine the set won't be a helpful test.

- One thing I suggested to another user was to Forget, then re-add the backup set. But that user complained that the Backup Set became locked between uses; you have said that your backup was progressing normally whe you got the error?

- Did you have the Verify option on? Did the error occur during the Compare pass (you said "the very end")?

- There is a Secret Preference (option+click on Preferences) for File System logging; I'd suggest turning that on and hope for helpful information.

- Can you copy and paste the relevant portion of the Log, showing the beginning of the Backup through the error?

- Does this Backup Set continue to be unusable? Can you make a new Backup Set and use that successfully?

I've included the log back to May 7 when things seemed to have worked normally. As I looked over the log I found a few other errors-not sure about the sigificance of those. Also, this problem may have something to do with the scheduled monthly recycle backup.

Verify is on, I turned File System logging on, and the backup set seems to be usable. I haven't tried making a new backup set yet-if i do should I combine the File backup set wth the catalog?

After asking for more information, you offered your log, which included these three entries that detailed three "file locked" errors:

+ Executing Verify at 5/23/2003 10:49 AM

To backup set Kessler Office G4?

Can't save catalog, error -45 (file locked).

5/23/2003 10:49:30 AM: Execution incomplete.

+ Executing Recatalog at 5/23/2003 11:51 AM

To backup set Kessler Office G4?

Can't save catalog, error -45 (file locked).

5/23/2003 11:51:53 AM: Execution incomplete.

+ Executing Verify at 5/23/2003 11:53 AM

To backup set Kessler Office G4?

Can't save catalog, error -45 (file locked).

5/23/2003 11:53:09 AM: Execution incomplete.

What's striking is that none of these three is a Recycle Backup, but is instead are Repair or Verify operations.

It's impossible to attempt to trouble shoot issues without knowing exactly what's going on. Information that doesn't match the log only confuses things.
