hansg Posted May 12, 2003 Report Share Posted May 12, 2003 Hi! We have come across a really strange problem. We have an Atto Express PCI Pro UL3D connected to an Apple Xserve 1.0GHz. On one SCSI channel we have an external InfiniSAN RAID box and on the other SCSI channel an IBM Ultrium 3580 LTO Tape Drive. Both devices are terminated. Cables are high quality. We are running Dantz Retrospect 5.0 Workgroup on the machine to backup the RAID as well as a local IDE volume and various network volumes to the tape drive. We previously had the _exact same devices and setup_ connected to _another host computer_ (regular late model G4) and everything was working flawlessly. However, after switching over to the Xserve the backup became inoperational. The backup simply stalls at a random phase of the backup process without any error message. The stalling also causes the entire computer to stall on most occasions. Sometimes it is possible to kill the Retrospect application to reboot, most of the times a force boot is required. I have tried everything imaginable many times over to solve the problem. Here's what I have tried so far: a) upgrade the SCSI host adapter firmware and drivers to the latest version upgrade Retrospect Driver to the latest version c) swapped SCSI channels between the two connected devices (the RAID disk seems to work fine on both channels) d) unplugged and plugged back the SCSI host adapter e) Tried setting channel termination to 'Full' and increasing the 'Selection Timeout' to 500 ms for the tape drive's channel with the ExpressPCI Configuration utility None of the above has helped at all. A peculiarity I have noticed is that I am able to backup all the network volumes just fine. So basically just the backup of local volumes (both SCSI and IDE) fail.
