kernel panic waking from sleep with "pending" scan of rerospect mounted volume

Recommended Posts

hello again;

related to my previous post re inexplicable corruption of an external volume, i observe that if a workstation which is running retrospect and is configuring a duplicate of a remote volume which retrospect has mounted is allowed to sleep it may be subject to a kernel panic when it wakes.

details:

workstation configutations as from my previous posts. (a.s.profiles available to interested parties.)

in connection with the previous report, i left the g4 with retrospect as the active application and the last attempted operation being the failed duplicate, to go to the remote 7300 to run the disk first aid checks again. i do not believe anything but the retrospect main dialog was showing and i do not believe the remote volume was visible on the desktop, but i am not sure. i can't be sure, as on the remote machine i ran first aid on all the _other_ volumes only, thinking i would try them next, so there was no indication if the first was still connected somehow.

when i returned to the g4 some time later it was asleep (black screen, disck spun down).

i moved the mouse. the disks spun up and the screen turned a light blue. not the normal background, not the boot blue. closer to gray. and stayed that way. so i shut it down, ran the hartware extended tests and did a safe boot.

i neglected to check for a panic log, but it has all the makings of a panic, so i repreated the process. i had observed during the earlier attempt to run the duplicate backup, that when i switched applications and reactivated retrospect, it had spontaneously started to scan the remote volume and was suspicious about the. so...

i started retrospect as the only desktop application.

i mounted the remote volume on the desktop.

i configured the volume to specify the password for automatic mounting.

(this i had to be repeated despite having done it in the previous attempt)

quit retrospect

unmouted the remote volume

started retrospect

started to configure an immediate duplicate from the remote volume (which was this time visible in the volume database display)

went through the step of selecting files and had it fails with the messages indicated in my previous post.

with the retrospect main dialog, the backup configuration dialog, and the file selection dialog showing and the volume visible on the desktop i put the g4 to sleep. that is apple>sleep.

i waited 30 seconds for the disk to quite.

i hit one of the arrow keys to wake it.

the original display content reappeared, half of it was then painted over with the half-blue/half-gray wash, and the kernel panic alert appeared.
