retrospect crashes OS X server services

Recommended Posts

We just upgraded our backup system so that we now have a LaCie AIT-2 Firewire drive connected to a Powermac G4 Server 500 MHz running OS X Server 10.2.4. Retrospect runs fine (recycle backup every Monday and incremental backups daily) and very quickly, however it seems to be interfering with other OS X server processes. Specifically, both mail services and Apple file services now seem to crash every night shortly after the Retrospect backup script kicks in. Neither of these problems existed prior to the installation of Retrospect on the server. Excerpt from last night's mail server log:

At the same time the Apple File services log shows:

10/Apr/2003:22:12:27 -0500: AppleTalk Listener closed because of ATalk error

I'm no networking expert but it would seem to me that both of these are network related errors (failure to locate the name servers; ATalk error). Is it possible that these other services are shutting down due to networking timeouts kicking in because Retrospect is using all the available network bandwidth? If so is it possible to tweak Retrospect's nice value to get it to be a little less aggressive? Or is the best solution to just keep Retrospect off the OS X Server machine? Or is this just a quirky problem with the old hardware that we have running the server (due to be replaced in a few weeks)?

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated...
